{"id":553065,"date":"2026-06-25T07:29:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T07:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/553065\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T07:29:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T07:29:12","slug":"simon-harris-briefs-social-media-influencers-on-upcoming-saving-and-investment-scheme-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/553065\/","title":{"rendered":"Simon Harris briefs social media influencers on upcoming saving and investment scheme \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Minister for Finance Simon Harris <\/a>has enlisted the help of social media influencers and online money coaches to help explain his upcoming savings and investment plan to the public. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Personal finance influencers from Instagram and TikTok were invited to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Department of Finance <\/a>on Monday for an exclusive briefing on the scheme, which the Government is hoping will incentivise the public to move some of the \u20ac170 billion held in savings into capital market investments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Details of the scheme are to be announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Budget 2027 <\/a>in October, with the investment accounts expected to open next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than a dozen people, including social media influencers and representatives from financial industry bodies, were invited to a \u201cconsumer roundtable\u201d earlier this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ann-Marie Gaynor, who has more than 70,000 followers on her \u201cIrish Budgeting Mammy\u201d Instagram account, and Cian Carolan, a finance expert with more than 40,000 followers, were present. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kel Galavan, the online money coach known as Mrs Smart Money, and Caroline Mooney, whose Irish Budgeting Instagram account has more than 265,000 followers, were also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Kel Galavan told her followers there will be no deemed disposal tax, Capital Gains Tax or exit tax on the investments\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6DZYKUUI2RBKRGLAPHKDSRAX3Q.png\"   width=\"800\" height=\"800\"\/>Kel Galavan told her followers there will be no deemed disposal tax, Capital Gains Tax or exit tax on the investments <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department wrote to the influencers by email on June 12th and invited them to the \u201cinvestment account consumer roundtable\u201d. The event was attended by Harris and Minister of State Robert Troy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to content posted by the influencers afterwards, the proposed scheme will use funds that already exist, like Exchange-Traded Funds \u2013 ready-made baskets of investments that include assets such as shares and bonds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Galavan told her followers there will be no deemed disposal tax, Capital Gains Tax or exit tax on the investments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInstead, it looks like it will be a flat annual fee, potentially like the Swedish model,\u201d she said. Galavan also said there will be an annual cap on contributions and that the scheme was \u201cshaping up to be a seriously positive move\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gaynor told her followers she had attended the event not in her capacity as a qualified financial adviser or as someone with a finance degree, but as \u201cIrish Budgeting Mammy\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd honestly, for the first time in a long time, I feel like the Government was actually listening to what ordinary people are saying about money.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The participants also discussed former minister for finance Charlie McCreevy\u2019s Special Savings Incentive Account scheme, with Mooney saying the new initiative \u201cwill be different, most likely\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department said the gathering brought together \u201corganisations and individuals with strong connections to end-consumers\u201d.
