It\u2019s in cars, trunks, sheds, at soccer practice and parties. It\u2019s convenient to have a quick source of water wherever you are, but in recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6553165\/microplastics-in-bottled-water-study\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">microplastics have been discovered in bottled water<\/a>. What\u2019s more, chemists who study food packaging have found that these bottles are not inert in the heat and sunlight. Substances in the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7336434\/plastic-cutting-board-material-microplastics-alternatives\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plastic<\/a>\u2014including the metal antimony, which is used as a catalyst in plastic manufacturing\u2014can migrate into liquids stored within.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201cThere is a direct association between the migration rate and the temperature,\u201d says Birgit Geueke of the nonprofit Food Packaging Forum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0043135407005246?via%3Dihub\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">citing a 2008 study<\/a>. Other substances, including bisphenol A, or <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3742871\/bpa-free-health\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BPA<\/a>, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0308814623027802?via%3Dihub\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">also been found leaking into some bottled waters as temperatures go up. <\/a>\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be there\u2014industry keeps telling us it shouldn&#8217;t be there\u2014but it\u2019s being measured,&#8221; says Olwenn Martin, an associate professor in health and environment at University College London. For these and other reasons, experts caution against exposing bottled water to sun and high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>What are plastic water bottles made of?<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Many single-use plastic water bottles are made with polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, a mainstay of packaged drinks and one of the only plastics that can be recycled into food containers. But aside from the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/06\/18\/top-10-percent-global-consumers-biggest-climate-impact\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">immense environmental footprint of single-use plastics<\/a>, there are other reasons to be sparing in your consumption of bottled water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">What they found was troubling. A number of research groups had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftb.com.hr\/images\/pdfarticles\/2017\/October-December\/FTB-55-562.pdf\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">observed substances migrating into bottled liquids<\/a>, although the amounts varied and the health implications are unclear. Many groups specifically examined the effects of temperature on migration; in many warmer parts of the world, tap water isn\u2019t safe, and paper authors were responding to safety concerns shared by many who rely on bottled water.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201cThe reality is that we shouldn\u2019t expose the PET bottles\u201d to high temperatures and sunlight, Iacovidou says. In such conditions, research suggests, they become less stable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What are the health effects of drinking water from hot plastic bottles?<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Over the years, studies have found that a wide variety of chemicals, in a wide range of quantities, migrate out of single-use plastic containers into the food or drink inside. Some of these chemicals, such as phthalate esters that act as endocrine disruptors, are known to be unhealthy, while others are more of a black box still. \u201cWe lack evidence on the cumulative effect of these chemicals in human bodies,\u201d Iacovidou says. \u201cThere is also the synergistic relationship of this with other chemicals that we are exposed to, so linking it to specific health implications\u2014we&#8217;re not there yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">As science catches up, experts say they are limiting food and drink in plastics where possible\u2014and especially avoiding heating them up. Different foods interact differently with plastics, says Martin, who worked on the review with Iacovidou. \u201cTomato or fruit juices will favor certain compounds and increase leaching; heat will increase leaching,\u201d she says. \u201cBut you also have fatty contents that may increase the leaching of other compounds.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the best way to store water bottles?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Bottled water should be kept somewhere cool and dark, Iacovidou says. But even in a cupboard in your home, temperatures could climb to levels that encourage migration, she notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/bottledwater.org\/bottled-water-storage\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a fact-sheet for consumers<\/a>, the International Bottled Water Association \u201cadvises consumers to store bottled water at room temperature or cooler, out of direct sunlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">What temperature should worry you? In tests with a variety of liquids, some substances start to migrate around 20\u00b0C, which is 68\u00b0F, while others are more mobile above 30-40\u00b0C (86-104\u00b0F), Iacovidou says. \u201cAt this range\u2026we start having migration of chemicals.\u201d Iacovidou herself uses a metal bottle for carrying water, as does Martin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">\u201cIf people can avoid putting anything in plastic in full sun, particularly with the kind of weather we&#8217;re having at the moment,\u201d says Martin, that\u2019s a good move.\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As the days heat up, the bottled water comes out.
