{"id":554729,"date":"2026-06-26T05:54:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T05:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/554729\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T05:54:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T05:54:12","slug":"irish-on-hantavirus-hit-cruise-ship-released-safely-from-42-day-quarantine-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/554729\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish on hantavirus-hit cruise ship released safely from 42-day quarantine \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two Irish people who had been on board a cruise ship hit by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hantavirus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hantavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">hantavirus<\/a> were released from quarantine on Monday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They served a quarantine period at the National Infectious Diseases Isolation Facility (NIDIF) at St Ita\u2019s Campus in Portrane, north Co Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both of the Irish people who had been on board the ship served a quarantine period of at least 42 days. One month was spent at the facility in Portrane, followed by a two-week period at their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The pair had returned to Ireland from Tenerife in early May on an Air Corps plane that landed at Casement Aerodrome military airbase in Baldonnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/05\/04\/he-was-deceased-on-the-ship-for-several-days-irishwoman-describes-hantavirus-outbreak\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/05\/04\/he-was-deceased-on-the-ship-for-several-days-irishwoman-describes-hantavirus-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ann Lane<\/a>, a former personal assistant to former president Mary Robinson who lives in Dublin, and her friend were accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive-hse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive-hse\/\" target=\"_blank\">Health Service Executive<\/a> (HSE) medics on the flight from Tenerife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The passengers and crew were required to isolate in accordance with national protocols to prevent further spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, the State agency responsible for monitoring infectious diseases, confirmed the Irish passengers had safely left quarantine and are \u201cwell\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMost of the other international identified contacts associated with the outbreak have also completed their quarantine period, with others expected to do so in coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The centre said the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has said the \u201clikelihood of additional cases associated with this outbreak is low\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe risk to Ireland remains very low,\u201d the centre added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Three passengers died following the outbreak, reported on the polar cruise ship MV Hondius, which was travelling between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/argentina\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/argentina\" target=\"_blank\">Argentina<\/a> and Cape Verde, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-health-organisation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organisation<\/a> (WHO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The surveillance centre  said 12 cases of hantavirus infection have been laboratory confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish passengers were among 149 people on board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe real shock was when the first people died because we just didn\u2019t know what this was,\u201d Lane had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/05\/04\/he-was-deceased-on-the-ship-for-several-days-irishwoman-describes-hantavirus-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/05\/04\/he-was-deceased-on-the-ship-for-several-days-irishwoman-describes-hantavirus-outbreak\/\">previously told The Irish Times of the first fatality<\/a>, which occurred before the ship reached St Helena, where it was scheduled to stop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Passengers were initially told the man had died of \u201cnatural causes\u201d.
