{"id":554887,"date":"2026-06-26T07:59:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T07:59:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/554887\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T07:59:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T07:59:17","slug":"puberty-blockers-at-risk-of-being-treated-like-sweeties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/554887\/","title":{"rendered":"Puberty blockers \u2018at risk of being treated like sweeties\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maya Forstater, the chief executive of Sex Matters, a campaign group, said it was \u201cgrossly irresponsible\u201d of Dr Cass \u201cto put children at grave risk by making misleading and unevidenced remarks in support of a trial of puberty blockers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said there was \u201cno evidence\u201d to support Dr Cass\u2019s claims that it would reduce children accessing unregulated drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer review was groundbreaking when it was published more than two years ago, but it has since been superseded by other systematic reviews, which were able to draw on more recent studies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach successive piece of research shows more clearly that puberty blockers are a fundamentally harmful treatment that should simply not be offered to children unhappy about their sex. The law is now clear, and no child should have their body harmed in the quest for an impossible outcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround 2,000 children have already been exposed to these drugs. If further evidence is required it should be provided by finding out how they have fared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the new protocol approved by the MHRA, <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/06\/19\/girls-as-young-as-11-eligible-for-restarted-puberty-blocker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">girls will need to be at least 11<\/a> and boys 12 to be put on puberty blockers.<\/p>\n<p>The medicines regulator had previously said it was concerned about \u201cpotentially significant\u201d biological harm and suggested a minimum age of 14 for participants.
