\n\tOn Thursday, Vice President JD Vance<\/a> paid a visit to the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California and, as is his wont, put his foot squarely in his mouth.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cHillbilly Elegy\u201d author, who compared President Trump to Hitler<\/a> before serving as his running mate, took it upon himself to defend Nixon\u2019s legacy and downplay his corruption.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think that his historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance \u2014but I think deservedly so,\u201d Vance said of Nixon<\/a>. \u201cIf Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story. Like, the idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe context was clear: Watergate would only be a 12-hour news story these days because it pales in comparison to the rampant corruption of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

\n\tVance sat down with Bill Maher<\/a> the following evening for an interview on \u201cReal Time\u201d to promote his new book \u201cCommunion\u201d about his faith, thereby becoming the first sitting vice president to appear on the HBO show. And the two kicked off their conversation talking about Vance\u2019s ongoing negotiations with Iran, which appear to be going nowhere.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou\u2019re negotiating for America. I\u2019m rooting for America\u2026 Why is this different? Why isn\u2019t it bullshit this time?\u201d asked Maher.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to Vance, his negotiations have been successful because oil is \u201cdown to 73 dollars a barrel\u201d and their \u201cnuclear program is destroyed,\u201d adding, \u201cIf they\u2019re willing to change, we\u2019re willing to change too; if they\u2019re not willing to change, we still fundamentally have all the cards and I think that\u2019s a good place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut their nuclear program isn\u2019t destroyed,\u201d Maher replied.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat part of it is not destroyed?\u201d questioned Vance. \u201cThe thing that you have to destroy is their ability to enrich uranium, which has been destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHow do we know that?\u201d shot back Maher. \u201cAll the time it was, we gotta get in there and we gotta get the dust. And we didn\u2019t get in there, so how do we get the dust?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe vice president reiterated that the program was \u201cfunctionally destroyed\u201d without citing any evidence to support it.<\/p>\n

\n\tMaher\u2019s next topic, or attempt at broaching one, was to try to get Vance to admit that the Trump administration\u2019s ICE enforcement went too far.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cICE, all that shit. Too rough. Too mean. Too unnecessary,\u201d offered Maher. \u201cI\u2019m not asking you to apologize\u2026 I\u2019m just saying, you\u2019d go a long way toward getting people who [have] just completely shut the door to you and your administration if you guys would just own that \u2014 that you guys went too far. You went too far, and you should own that like you owned \u2018childless cat ladies.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVance obfuscated, saying, \u201cYou can\u2019t do a law enforcement operation like that without having some situations that are recorded like that\u2026 I don\u2019t think there was an easy way to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMaher then confessed to Vance that he could vote for the next Republican candidate over a democratic socialist if the right would at least begin conceding losses in elections instead of crying foul play every time, a la Trump.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf this is where the Democratic Party is going\u2026 this obsession with Israel, with the Jew-hating, with they don\u2019t believe in capitalism, no prisons, if this is where they\u2019re going, my vote is in play,\u201d Maher told Vance. \u201cIt\u2019s either going to be you or Rubio. Here\u2019s my dealbreaker for your side: Under Trump, you guys have two outcomes that an election can be, either we win or they cheated. That shit has to stop. And that means the person who has to stop it will be you, or Marco. Can you tell me you will do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe could not.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOK, Bill, so this is where I\u2019m probably going to lose ya here,\u201d offered Vance. \u201cI don\u2019t think we should not concede elections, but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s what\u2019s going on\u2026 The biggest criticism I had of the 2020 election is that you had technology companies that were quite literally censoring negative information about the left and promoting negative information about the right.\u201d (And yet, right-leaning Facebook pages reportedly<\/a> earned more engagement than left-leaning ones during the 2020 election.)<\/p>\n

\n\tMaher fired back: \u201cWell, you\u2019re going to get a big pat on the back when you go back to the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThroughout their interview, Maher seemed outmatched, with Vance talking circles around him.
