{"id":55737,"date":"2025-09-10T18:48:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/55737\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T18:48:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:48:07","slug":"poland-closest-to-open-conflict-since-world-war-two-says-tusk-after-drone-incident-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/55737\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland \u2018closest to open conflict since World War Two\u2019, says Tusk after drone incident \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poland\" target=\"_blank\">Poland<\/a> shot down drones in its airspace on Wednesday with the backing of military aircraft from its Nato allies, the first time a member of the western military alliance is known to have fired shots during Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Polish prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-tusk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-tusk\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Tusk<\/a> told parliament it was \u201cthe closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two\u201d, although he also said he had \u201cno reason to believe we\u2019re on the brink of war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Moscow denied responsibility for the incident, with a senior diplomat in Poland saying the drones came from the direction of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The leaders of France, Britain, Germany and Canada were among the Nato leaders to condemn the Russian incursion in strong terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The White House said Mr Trump is tracking the reports from Poland and there are plans for him to speak later today with Polish president Karol Nawrocki, a conservative nationalist and political ally who was hosted at the White House last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">On Truth Social, the US president said: \u201cWhat\u2019s with Russia violating Poland\u2019s airspace with drones? Here we go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said Ireland \u201cstands in full solidarity with Poland and its right to take necessary steps to defend its sovereign territory\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">European leaders, who have lately been trying to persuade US president Donald Trump to join them in tightening sanctions on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a> and boosting support for Kyiv, said it justified a collective response. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poland said 19 objects entered its airspace during a large Russian air attack on Ukraine, and that it shot down those that posed a threat. Mr Tusk called the incident a \u201clarge-scale provocation\u201d and said he activated article four of Nato\u2019s treaty, under which alliance members can demand consultations with their allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Nato spokesperson said the organisation\u2019s chief Mark Rutte was in touch with Polish leadership and the alliance is consulting closely with Poland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Polish F-16 fighter jets, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS surveillance planes and NATO mid-air refuelling aircraft scrambled in an operation to shoot down drones entering Polish airspace from Tuesday evening until morning, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One drone smashed into pensioner Tomasz Wesolowski\u2019s two-storey brick house in the eastern Polish village of Wyryki-Wola at 6.30am while he was downstairs watching news about the incursion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The roof was destroyed and debris was strewn across the bedroom. Mr Wesolowski told Reuters the house \u201cneeds to be demolished\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A blackened spot in a field elsewhere in southeastern Poland showed where some other drones had fallen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Andrey Ordash, Russia\u2019s charge d\u2019affaires in Poland, was cited by RIA state news agency as calling accusations of an incursion \u201cgroundless\u201d and said Poland had not given any evidence that the drones shot down were of Russian origin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Kremlin declined to comment directly on the downing of the drones but spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: \u201cThe leadership of the EU and Nato accuse Russia of provocations on a daily basis. Most of the time, without even trying to present at least some kind of argument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During the incident, the operational command of the Polish Armed Forces urged residents to stay at home, with three eastern regions at particular risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several Polish airports were temporarily closed, including one that has been used as the main access point for Western officials and supplies travelling to Ukraine over land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nato\u2019s Mr Rutte said a full assessment of the incident had not yet been made but added that, \u201cwhether it was intentionally or not, it is absolutely reckless, it is absolutely dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Countries bordering Ukraine have reported occasional Russian missiles or drones entering their airspace in the past during the war, but not on such a large scale, and they are not known to have shot them down. Two people were killed in Poland in 2022 by a Ukrainian air defence missile that went astray.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Reuters footage showed a blackened spot in a brown field in southeastern Poland where drones fell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since Nato\u2019s creation in 1949, article 4 has been invoked seven times, most recently in February 2022 following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRussia\u2019s war is escalating, not ending. We must raise the cost on Moscow, strengthen support for Ukraine, and invest in Europe\u2019s defence,\u201d the EU\u2019s top diplomat Kaja Kallas said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Early indications suggested the entry of Russian drones into European airspace was intentional, not accidental, she added in her post on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ukrainian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a> said Russia used 415 drones and 40 missiles in attacks on Ukraine overnight, adding that at least eight Iranian-made shahed drones had been aimed towards Poland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAn extremely dangerous precedent for Europe,\u201d he said. \u201cA strong response is needed \u2013 and it can only be a joint response by all partners: Ukraine, Poland, all Europeans, the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Russia has long said it has no intention of stoking a war with Nato and that western European countries suggesting it is a threat were trying to worsen relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for more sanctions on Russia, and said the EU is preparing sanctions on \u2018shadow fleet\u2019 oil tankers and third countries that buy Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump, who warmly welcomed Mr Putin in Alaska at a summit in August, said over the weekend he was ready to move to a second phase of sanctioning Russia after months of talks about a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was his strongest indication yet that he may escalate pressure on Moscow or its oil buyers in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The European Union\u2019s top sanctions official has been in Washington this week to discuss coordinated sanctions.
