Google Cloud<\/a>\u2019s chief executive has reportedly outlined how the company is generating revenue through AI services.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve\u00a0made billions\u00a0using AI already,\u201d\u00a0Thomas Kurian<\/a>\u00a0said Tuesday (Sept. 9) at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference in San Francisco<\/a>, CNBC reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur backlog is now at $106 billion \u2014 it is growing faster than our revenue. More than 50% of it will convert to revenue over the next two years,\u201d Kurian said.<\/p>\n

Google reported revenue of $13.62 billion for its cloud computing unit, up 32% over the previous year. The company\u2019s\u00a0cloud business<\/a>\u00a0trails those of\u00a0Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Amazon<\/a>, the report noted, but is growing faster than them.<\/p>\n

In some cases, the revenue comes from people paying by consumption, such as enterprise customers who purchase artificial intelligence infrastructure. Others pay for cloud services through subscriptions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou pay per user per monthly fee \u2014 for example,\u00a0agents or Workspace<\/a>,\u201d said Kurian, referring to the company\u2019s Gemini products and Google Workspace productivity suite, which come with a number of subscription tiers.<\/p>\n

Kurian told the conference that upselling is another important part of Google Cloud\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also upsell people as they use more of it from one version to another because we have higher quality models and higher-priced tiers,\u201d he said, also noting that Google is capturing new customers more quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen 28% sequential quarter-over-quarter growth in new customer wins in the first half of the year,\u201d said Kurian, with nearly two-thirds of customers already using Google Cloud\u2019s AI tools.<\/p>\n

In other Google Cloud news, the company\u2019s head of strategy, Web3 said recently that Google\u2019s Layer 1 blockchain will provide a\u00a0neutral infrastructure layer<\/a>\u00a0for use by financial institutions.<\/p>\n

In a post on LinkedIn,\u00a0Rich Widmann<\/a>\u00a0wrote that the blockchain, Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL), \u201cbrings together years of R&D at Google to provide financial institutions with a novel Layer 1 that is performant, credibly neutral and enables Python-based smart contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linking to a March report by PYMNTS, Widmann added that\u00a0CME Group<\/a>\u00a0employed GCUL to as it explored\u00a0tokenization and payments<\/a>\u00a0on its commodities exchange.<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides bringing to bear Google\u2019s distribution, GCUL is a neutral infrastructure layer,\u201d Widmann wrote in his post. \u201cTether<\/a>\u00a0won\u2019t use\u00a0Circle\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0blockchain \u2014 and\u00a0Adyen<\/a>\u00a0probably won\u2019t use\u00a0Stripe\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0blockchain. But any financial institution can build with GCUL.\u201d<\/p>\n
