On Tuesday, Ralph Lauren announced that they\u2019re launching an AI styling assistant called \u201cAsk Ralph.\u201d According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ralph-lauren-has-entered-the-ai-age-85fab407?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAjdj9Qmcfv0Rxl-yqIC5IvU2tLKDVK_zenaOqwXMpF7MGowb7xfXglH70fkwLw%3D&amp;gaa_ts=68c19fee&amp;gaa_sig=bhZetuaqiDMtfsIPkrCCM5rDR8jUHQ8OsLpHa1RoswE9tGqQRjrkutvUrNdtRA0wK9uaHCK_Zib1FCKmjaygHg%3D%3D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> interview with David Lauren, Ralph Lauren\u2019s son and the chief branding and innovation officer at the brand, the so-called \u201cAI-powered fashion styling helper\u201d is \u201ctrained on decades of Ralph Lauren archives and lookbooks\u201d and \u201ccan suggest outfit options for events and answer vital fashion questions in natural language.\u201d As of Tuesday, it\u2019s already available on the brand\u2019s app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmfea4imo001b3b78d3p944n5@published\" data-word-count=\"93\">In the interview, Lauren acknowledged that not everyone would be thrilled with this feature, but said he\u2019s fine with that. \u201cIt\u2019s like putting a line on the runway. Part of fashion is exposing yourself with newness and evolving \u2026 And we know there\u2019s a critic for everything. But we also know that that\u2019s feedback,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll decide if that feedback is useful or not. We want to get in the game. And sometimes we\u2019ll hit it out of the park, and sometimes it\u2019ll just be a step in a direction of evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmfea4ipr001c3b78s2nv0awo@published\" data-word-count=\"49\">Lauren is far from the only fashion exec betting big on AI. In July, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/looks-like-theres-an-ai-model-in-vogue.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI model<\/a> appeared in an advertisement for Guess that was featured in Vogue. Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/did-jcrew-use-ai-on-instagram-campaign.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J.Crew<\/a> put out a whole campaign featuring supposedly \u201cvintage\u201d imagery that was actually created by a self-described \u201cAI photographer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmfea4ir6001d3b78f776zanf@published\" data-word-count=\"74\">For what it\u2019s worth, I tried asking \u201cAsk Ralph\u201d to assemble me outfits for a few different occasions, and it spat back a bunch of uninspired looks\u00a0\u2014 along with links to buy them on the Ralph Lauren website \u2014 that any casual shopper could have put together on their own. I got the same outfits \u2014 including a plain gray dress with a black scarf, black purse, and black shoes \u2014 a couple times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmfeadg2s000g3b78niy5pqeq@published\" data-word-count=\"46\">Some were more confusing. For a casual outdoor wedding, it suggested I wear a white sundress with a cream cable-knit wool bucket hat. To really give it a challenge, I asked it for some avant-garde looks, and it recommended an olive-green turtleneck with blue jeans. Daring!<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmfeaddbl000c3b78qmiwom06@published\" data-word-count=\"23\">Finally, I also asked if it agrees that using AI is deeply un-chic.
