Summer is officially here, which means barbecue<\/a> season is in full swing.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re planning to fire up the grill<\/a> and enjoy hot dogs and burgers with your nearest and dearest, you might want to think twice before buying the most expensive bangers.<\/p>\n That\u2019s because a recent taste test has revealed that cheap supermarket own-brand sausages are the UK\u2019s best. <\/p>\n According to a blind taste test of 65 people, Lidl<\/a>\u2019s Deluxe Pork Sausages (\u00a32.49 for 400g) are the cream of the crop<\/strong>, beating out competition from M&S, Sainsbury\u2019s<\/a> and Morrisons<\/a> as well as brands like Heck, Jolly Hog and The Black Farmer.\u00a0<\/p>\n 10 supermarket<\/a> own-brand sausages were pitted against each other in the test and compared with two popular brands, and three were named the superior \u2018best buys\u2019 of the lot.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t Lidl\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0sausages topped the rankings with a score of 73 per cent as consumers loved their \u2018delectable taste\u2019, \u2018moist consistency\u2019, and \u2018just right\u2019 salt levels.<\/p>\n They were hailed as the best overall for \u2018eating pleasure\u2019, and also given a \u2018best buy\u2019 award as they were the cheapest of the bunch tried in the taste test.<\/p>\n However, it\u2019s worth noting that Lidl\u2019s sausages are pretty high in saturated fat. Two sausages contain 11.5g, which is more than half the recommended daily maximum for women and more than a third for men.<\/p>\n \t\t Following closely behind the bargain retailer,\u00a0Aldi\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>Specially Selected Pork Sausages (\u00a32.49 for 400g) scored 72 per cent.<\/p>\n They matched Lidl on price, and were hailed as \u2018impressive all-rounders\u2019 by consumers.<\/p>\n They scored highly across the board for \u2018aroma\u2019, \u2018meaty flavour\u2019 and \u2018looks\u2019, but just missed out on the top spot because a few people felt they needed a \u2018slightly stronger herbal kick\u2019.<\/p>\n Morrisons<\/a>\u00a0was in joint-second place, scoring 72 per cent for The Best Thick Pork Sausages (\u00a33.25 for 400g). These bangers delivered a \u2018classic\u2019 flavour, but were described as having a \u2018slightly coarser\u2019 texture than others.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tHey, foodies! As a loyal reader and a part of our vibrant community, we want to make sure you never miss our articles when searching for stories<\/p>\n Click the button below and tick\u00a0Metro.co.uk<\/strong>\u00a0to ensure you see stories from us first in Google Search.<\/p>\n \nAdd us as a Preferred Source<\/a>\n<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t\t\tSausage ranking from the blind taste test:\t\t\t<\/p>\n At the other end of the list,\u00a0Waitrose<\/a>\u2019s No. 1 Free Range Pork Sausages (\u00a35.25 for 400g) only scored 53 per cent, despite having the highest meat content of any of the products in the test (98 per cent).<\/p>\n People were disappointed by the lack of \u2018herb and spice seasoning\u2019, and only a quarter enjoyed the texture.<\/p>\n At 88p per sausage, these were the most expensive, and Which notes that shoppers could buy twice as many of Lidl\u2019s sausages for the same price.<\/p>\n Two high-welfare branded products, The Jolly Hog Proper Porkers (\u00a33.80 for 400g at Tesco) and Porky Whites Premium Traditional Pork sausages (\u00a33.50 for 400g), were also featured in the mix, but ended up towards the bottom of the rankings, with a score of 65 per cent.<\/p>\n The Jolly Hog\u2019s offering was said to \u2018look and smell good\u2019, but some were left disappointed by the taste.<\/p>\n Similarly, Porky Whites looked \u2018excellent\u2019 but were deemed \u2018somewhat bland flavour-wise\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tMore supermarket own-brand best buys:\t\t\t<\/p>\n How was the taste test conducted?<\/p>\n All of the sausages were blind-tasted and rated by a panel of 65 people in April 2026. The panel was made up of people who buy and eat pork sausages, and who broadly represent the demographic profile of adults in the UK (age range, gender split and more).\u00a0<\/p>\n The sausages were cooked according to the pack instructions and served in a random order to avoid any bias. Each tester had a private tasting booth so they couldn\u2019t discuss what they were tasting or be influenced by others.<\/p>\n The tasters then rated the flavour, aroma, appearance and texture of each sausage, and shared what they liked and disliked.\u00a0<\/p>\n The overall score given was based on 50 per cent flavour, 20 per cent appearance, 15 per cent aroma and 15 per cent texture. These weightings were what consumers ranked as the most important attributes when tasting pork sausages.<\/p>\n A version of this article was first published on April 26, 2026.
