{"id":559464,"date":"2026-06-29T06:37:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T06:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/559464\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T06:37:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T06:37:18","slug":"ireland-secure-historic-t20-series-victory-over-world-champions-india-in-belfast-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/559464\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland secure historic T20 series victory over world champions India in Belfast \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><b>2nd T20 international: Ireland 154-8<\/b> (20 ovs) (H Tector 53, B Calitz 37; P Yadav 3-22),<b> India 153-9<\/b> (20 ovs) (T Varma 55; M Hollard 3-26, J Moondra 3-32). <b>Ireland won by 1 run and win series 2-0.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland secured a historic T20 international series victory over India after closing out a tense one-run win in Belfast on Sunday to secure a 2-0 series win over the reigning world champions in the format.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Having never beaten India before Friday\u2019s 34-run win at the same venue, it completed a brilliant weekend for Irish cricket with the women\u2019s team beating West Indies in Bristol on Saturday to secure their first win in a World T20 tournament at the 22nd attempt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Harry Tector had marked his 100th T20 international appearance with a well-crafted half-century as Ireland recovered from a slow start to post 154 for eight at Stormont.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jai Moondra \u2013 who struck with his first ball in international cricket in Friday\u2019s 34-run victory \u2013 trapped Sanju Samson lbw off the opening delivery and then also dispatched Abhishek Sharma in the same over before soon removing India captain Shreyas Iyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although India regrouped following a rain delay, with Tilak Varma making 55 and a brave late 21 from Harshit Rana, they came up just short at 153 for nine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After winning the toss and putting Ireland into bat, India \u2013 who again opted against handing 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his senior debut \u2013 made early breakthroughs to remove Ireland openers Tim Tector (five) and then Ross Adair (16) inside three overs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker (15) edged behind to give Prince Yadav his maiden T20 international wicket as the hosts went on to reach 58 for three at the halfway stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ben Calitz then helped pick up the pace on with swift 37 before being caught at the deep point boundary. Photograph: Ramsey Cardy\/Sportsfile <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following a brief rain delay, and the departure of George Dockrell for a rapid 19, Harry Tector brought up his half-century with a four off the last ball of the 19th over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tector saw his innings end on 53 from 47 balls when wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan took a diving catch off Yadav, who claimed three for 22 as Ireland ended at 154 for eight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">India-born Moondra gave Ireland the perfect start when he snared Sanju Samson lbw, which was upheld despite a review by the India opener.
