An urgent alert has been issued to consumers as several well-known food products stocked in Irish supermarkets have been withdrawn from shelves amid concerns they could pose a significant health risk to customers.<\/p>\n
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland is urging anyone who bought the affected items to cease consuming them immediately, and return them to the shop where they were purchased for a full refund, reports the Irish Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n The recall involves specific batches of K O’Connell Fishmongers Smoked Salmon Slices, which are sold in Cork’s renowned English Market and in selected Dunnes Stores<\/a> supermarkets.<\/p>\n The popular products are being removed from shelves due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially fatal bacteria that can cause severe health complications for certain individuals.<\/p>\n The products subject to recall are the O’Connell Fishmongers Smoked Salmon Slices; pack sizes: 100g, 150g and 320g, with a batch code of SS16726 and a use by date of 16\/07\/2026.<\/p>\n The food safety watchdog has confirmed that retailers have been instructed to withdraw the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at the point of purchase.<\/p>\n Shoppers who may have bought the fish products are being strongly advised not to consume them and to return the items for a full refund. No receipt is necessary.<\/p>\n The above batch of K O’Connell Fishmongers Smoked Salmon Slices is being recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes<\/p>\n Listeriosis is an infection triggered by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, and is typically contracted through eating food contaminated with this bacterium. Listeria has the potential to taint a broad variety of foods, though the majority of cases stem from consuming chilled, ready-to-eat products.<\/p>\n Certain foods carry a higher risk of harbouring the bacteria, including soft cheeses, deli meats, and dairy products that haven’t undergone pasteurisation \u2014 the process used to eliminate harmful bacteria.<\/p>\n Those struck down with Listeria monocytogenes may experience mild, flu-like symptoms, or digestive issues such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In uncommon instances, the infection can take a more serious turn, leading to potentially dangerous complications.<\/p>\n In the most severe cases, the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can make its way into the bloodstream, causing a blood stream infection. From there, it can travel to the central nervous system, potentially triggering meningitis.<\/p>\n Certain groups face a heightened risk from Listeria monocytogenes infections, particularly pregnant women, newborns, and those with compromised immune systems, including elderly people.
