{"id":56007,"date":"2025-09-10T21:49:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T21:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/56007\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T21:49:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T21:49:13","slug":"conor-mcgregor-may-not-get-to-address-presidential-nomination-meeting-of-dublin-city-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/56007\/","title":{"rendered":"Conor McGregor may not get to address presidential nomination meeting of Dublin City Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41682002.html\">Conor McGregor<\/a> is not yet listed among the independents who will address Dublin City Council next week in a bid to obtain its nomination for the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>The former MMA fighter has written to the council asking to address it next Monday but has not yet confirmed his eligibility to the council according to an email sent to councillors on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Dublin City Council has asked all prospective candidates to prove their eligibility to become president before accepting their requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr McGregor&#8217;s application was in before the deadline and he can prove his eligibility before Monday, it is understood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr McGregor, who in July <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/courtandcrime\/arid-41680187.html\">lost his appeal against a High Court jury\u2019s finding<\/a> that he was civilly liable for the assault of Nikita Hand, has repeatedly <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41699363.html\">indicated he wants to contest the election<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He has written to a number of councils including Tipperary asking to be allowed to address councillors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4776095_15_articleinlinemobile_CC_20BY-ELECTION_20_30.jpg\" alt=\"Dublin Bay South byelection candidate Dolores Cahill being refused entry to the count centre at the RDS in 2021 for refusing to wear a face mask. Picture: Gareth Chaney\/Collins<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There are 10 confirmed candidates for the Monday meeting, including former professor at UCD <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-40758726.html\">Dolores Cahill<\/a> who in 2021 was fined \u00a32,500 (\u20ac2,900) for holding an anti-lockdown protest in London in \u201cflagrant breach\u201d of covid restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Fianna F\u00e1il will not block its councillors from backing independent presidential candidates, but has asked them to \u201cdo everything they can\u201d to get Jim Gavin elected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41702684.html\">The party\u2019s Ard Comhairle decided not to whip its councillors<\/a> in their respective votes at council level, but has given what a senior source said was a \u201cnudge\u201d to work to see the former Dublin GAA boss elected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A source said that the party \u201ctrusts\u201d its councillors, but that they can \u201cdo as they please\u201d with regard to any candidate who comes before a council meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another source said that while the party will not stop councillors from voting for an independent candidate, there is a sense that the request to \u201cdo everything\u201d to see Mr Gavin elected is, in effect, \u201ca clear enough ask\u201d and there is no sense that many councillors want to back a non-Fianna F\u00e1il candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork City councillor Tony Fitzgerald said Fianna F\u00e1il councillors have not met to discuss the party\u2019s meeting on Monday which will hear from independents, but said he would not support another candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe have a player on the pitch, why would we put another on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, a number of Sinn F\u00e9in TDs believe the party should back Catherine Connolly in a bid to unite the left-wing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The party will decide next week whether to enter the race or to back the Galway West Independent TD who has asked Sinn F\u00e9in to support her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Earlier this week, party leader Mary Lou McDonald ruled herself out as a potential candidate and a number of party sources now believe that supporting Ms Connolly is the best course of action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Conor McGregor is not yet listed among the independents who will address Dublin City Council next week in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":56008,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[9,10,4003,64,18,13,14,6,19,17,11,12,15,16,5,59,7,8],"class_list":{"0":"post-56007","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-conor-mcgregor","11":"tag-covid-19","12":"tag-eire","13":"tag-featured-news","14":"tag-featurednews","15":"tag-headlines","16":"tag-ie","17":"tag-ireland","18":"tag-latest-news","19":"tag-latestnews","20":"tag-main-news","21":"tag-mainnews","22":"tag-news","23":"tag-presidential-election","24":"tag-top-stories","25":"tag-topstories"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/56007","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=56007"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/56007\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/56008"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=56007"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=56007"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=56007"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
