{"id":56023,"date":"2025-09-10T22:02:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T22:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/56023\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T22:02:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T22:02:08","slug":"leo-varadkar-considers-a-political-life-at-dublin-book-launch-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/56023\/","title":{"rendered":"Leo Varadkar considers a political life at Dublin book launch \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Former Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/leo-varadkar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/leo-varadkar\/\">Leo Varadkar<\/a> has said he hoped the \u201cpushback against social progress is just a phase the world is going through\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Reflecting on his years in politics, he believed it was easy to forget that until a decade ago there was no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/same-sex-marriage-referendum\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/same-sex-marriage-referendum\/\">same-sex marriage<\/a> in Ireland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/abortion\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/abortion\/\">abortion<\/a> was illegal and trans men and women could not have their gender recognised in law without a complicated court process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThere was no children\u2019s amendments in the Constitution, no statute of sick pay, no paternity leave, no parental leave, and many other things that I think have changed for the better in our society in the past 10 or 12 years,\u201d he said on Wednesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Varadkar was speaking at the launch of his memoir, Speaking My Mind, at the National Library of Ireland. It was attended by many political colleagues past and present including his successor Simon Harris, former Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and his successor Roderic O\u2019Gorman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Former T\u00e1naiste Mary Harney and Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte were also in attendance, as were, somewhat surprisingly, former TDs Mick Wallace and Clare Daly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Varadkar\u2019s parents Ashok and Miriam were there, as was his partner Matthew Barrett. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">At 38, the Dublin TD became the youngest taoiseach in the history of the State and was also the youngest to vacate the office, at just 45, when he resigned in April last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/09\/08\/leo-varadkar-autobiography-six-takeaways-from-golfgate-to-that-heave-against-enda-kenny\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leo Varadkar&#8217;s Memoir: Six Takeaways Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He wrote the book to recall events while they were fresh in his memory, he said. Even so, his former chief-of-staff Brian Murphy and former speech writer and special adviser Professor Patrick Geoghegan, read early drafts and reminded him of things he misremembered. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He joked that he tells students of politics that they could learn from him how to introduce property and carbon taxes without having to withdraw them later, but also how to \u201cabsolutely mess up water charges\u201d, which every other country in the world appears to have left behind. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/03\/09\/family-and-care-referendums-comprehensively-defeated\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Family and care referendums comprehensively defeatedOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Similarly, they could learn how to pass referendums on abortion and same sex marriage while simultaneously messing up the referendums on a woman\u2019s place  in the home and on the definition of the family, he said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Former RT&#xC9; journalist Bryan Dobson launches Leo Varadkar's book Speaking My Mind at the National Library of Ireland\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ETKEO4DJWFHUNIA53W6HXO6BYE.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Former RT\u00c9 journalist Bryan Dobson launches Leo Varadkar&#8217;s book Speaking My Mind at the National Library of Ireland <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The book was launched by retired RT\u00c9 broadcaster Bryan Dobson, who recalled that it was a \u201cpolitical bombshell\u201d when Mr Varadkar announced his retirement last year.
