{"id":562052,"date":"2026-06-30T18:48:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T18:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/562052\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T18:48:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T18:48:12","slug":"dups-edwin-poots-says-he-would-never-have-protected-jeffrey-donaldson-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/562052\/","title":{"rendered":"DUP\u2019s Edwin Poots says he would never have protected Jeffrey Donaldson \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland-assembly\/\">Northern Ireland Assembly<\/a> Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/edwin-poots\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/edwin-poots\/\">Edwin Poots<\/a> has insisted that he \u201cwould never have protected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jeffrey-donaldson\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jeffrey-donaldson\/\">Jeffrey Donaldson<\/a> in any circumstance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> has called on the Speaker to stand aside pending a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/democratic-unionist-party\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/democratic-unionist-party\">Democratic Unionist Party<\/a> (DUP) investigation into claims of inappropriate behaviour by Donaldson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poots has faced pressure from several Stormont parties over his role in an incident where a woman raised concern about behaviour by former DUP leader Donaldson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sinn F\u00e9in chief whip Sin\u00e9ad Ennis told MLAs that the incident raised \u201cserious questions\u201d over his role as Speaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donaldson was last week convicted of 18 sex offences, including one count of rape, relating to abuse of two women when they were children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Subsequent media reports have raised questions about how much was known within the DUP about Donaldson\u2019s wider conduct in the period before his 2024 arrest over sex abuse allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">BBC Spotlight has reported that some senior DUP figures were aware of another woman, who was not involved in the recent court case, who had raised concerns about Donaldson\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the programme, former North Antrim MP Ian Paisley jnr said the woman did not want to make a formal complaint but he said he told Poots, who was then party leader and is now Stormont Speaker, about her concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Questions have also been raised around whether there was an awareness that Donaldson was allegedly engaged in behaviour in his private life that, although legal, was at odds with positions he adopted publicly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/06\/27\/man-of-the-church-how-jeffrey-donaldson-weaponised-his-faith-to-cover-up-sexual-abuse\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Man of the church: How Jeffrey Donaldson weaponised his faith to cover up sexual abuseOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The DUP is commissioning an independent review into issues raised since Donaldson was convicted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the Assembly on Tuesday, SDLP Opposition leader Matthew O\u2019Toole asked about standing orders for recall of MLAs over the summer recess to ask further questions about the fallout from the Donaldson conviction and to express confidence or otherwise in the Speaker or others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poots responded: \u201cYou know full well the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf anybody has any notion that I done anything to protect Jeffrey Donaldson, after all that he had done to me previously, they are living in some other world or other planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI will be cleared of any of the accusations that have been made against me, by any individuals in this place or outside of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBecause I have done nothing wrong, I make that absolutely clear. I would never have protected Jeffrey Donaldson in any circumstance had he done wrong, but given what he done on me in particular previous to that, I definitely wouldn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier Ennis raised concerns about Poots\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRevelations over recent days that members of the DUP, including the Assembly Speaker Edwin Poots, had knowledge of the exploitation of a young woman by the now convicted paedophile Jeffrey Donaldson raises serious questions for the DUP,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEven if we accept that there were no criminal or safeguarding issues, and that remains to be seen, there was clearly knowledge of inappropriate behaviour by Donaldson, which, according to the current DUP leader [Gavin Robinson], was not passed to the party officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe result of this is that these issues were not raised or dealt with, even as the DUP elevated Donaldson to the leadership of the DUP, effectively Donaldson\u2019s behaviour was ignored, and in terms of this Assembly, it raises serious questions for Edwin Poots as Assembly Speaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is at best a gross misjudgment by the Speaker, at worst it is a fundamental and disastrous moral \u201cdangerous paedophile went unchallenged\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWorse still, and despite clear and knowing red flags, he was elected leader of the DUP,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOn that basis, I am calling for the Speaker to now stand aside pending the full disclosure of all of the issues and any and all knowledge of them within the DUP about inappropriate behaviour before and during Donaldson\u2019s time as DUP leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Monday, current DUP leader Gavin Robinson said \u201cit is clear\u201d there are former and current DUP members who had information about the conduct of Donaldson that was not shared with the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking to the Assembly on Monday, Poots said there was \u201cnothing of a criminal or safeguarding nature raised\u201d in the concerns of the woman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he had asked the chief executive of the Assembly to carry out an investigation relating to Donaldson\u2019s actions when he was an MLA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">DUP leader Robinson told the BBC Talkback programme on Tuesday that he has \u201cno reason to doubt\u201d Poots\u2019s account of his handling of concerns raised by the woman about Donaldson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Robinson said other political parties had used the situation for \u201cpolitical purpose\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe hypocrisy that lies behind those in politics using this tragedy for their own political ends, it\u2019s not only disappointing but I think it\u2019s clear for the public to see,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe won\u2019t leave any stone unturned, we\u2019re bringing someone in who is independent to conduct this review in a way no other party has, including those hypocrites in Stormont who now seem to be
