(ABC News: Marco Catalano)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Leane credited her survival to antiretroviral treatment (ART), which emerged in 1996 and stopped HIV from replicating in the body. It allowed people to live longer, healthier lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">More than 30,000 Australians live with HIV, with most of them taking the life-changing antiretroviral treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From today, the treatment will be available from public hospital pharmacies in South Australia at no cost, regardless of a patient&#8217;s Medicare status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">ART is already free across most of the country, but until now, South Australians have been out of pocket by up to $30 a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve met people who say: &#8216;Well, I&#8217;m not on medication because I can&#8217;t afford it&#8217;. It&#8217;s like, we need everyone on medication,&#8221; Ms Leane said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Boxes and bottles of white pills on a white tabletop\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20032647c7657b5f91444b2ee93ab4e3.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Antiretroviral treatment (ART) medication for HIV will be free for South Australians from July 1.\u00a0 (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Typically taken as one or multiple daily tablets, ART can decrease the amount of virus to such low levels that it is undetectable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Multiple clinical trials, including a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-07-25\/hiv-positive-men-taking-daily-medication-will-not-pass-virus-on\/8742154\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/8742154\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large international study<\/a> led by Australia&#8217;s Kirby Institute, found that the virus was not transmitted to partners when the viral load was undetectable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This means it is not passed on to sexual partners, and also helps to prevent transmission during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I remember it being referred to as the prevention revolution at the time, it was incredible evidence,&#8221; SHINE SA chief executive Holley Skene said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For people living with HIV, that was just such brilliant, welcome, comforting, reassuring news.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For so long, the anxiety of passing on HIV potentially to your partners was overwhelming for so many people, it greatly impacted their mental health and wellbeing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SHINE SA chief executive Holley Skene looks directly at the camera with a smile on her face.
