July 1 (Reuters) – Meta Platforms is building a cloud business to sell excess AI<\/a> computing capacity, Bloomberg News reported \u200con Wednesday citing people familiar with the matter. <\/p>\n

The move \u200ccould reduce Meta’s reliance on advertising revenue and help it take on major cloud \u200bcompanies, including Amazon, Microsoft<\/a> and Alphabet. <\/p>\n

Shares of the company were up nearly 6% in premarket trading. <\/p>\n

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters could not independently verify the report. <\/p>\n

One option under \u200cconsideration is offering customers \u2060access to AI models hosted on Meta’s existing infrastructure, similar to Amazon Web Services’ Bedrock platform, the \u2060report said. <\/p>\n

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said earlier this year that the company could enter the cloud computing business if it overspends on \u200bdata \u200bcenters and has excess capacity. <\/p>\n

Big Tech \u200bfirms are expected to \u200cspend more than $700 billion on AI infrastructure this year, up from around $400 billion in 2025. <\/p>\n

“It’s definitely on the table,” Zuckerberg said at Meta’s annual shareholder meeting in May, adding that “almost every week,” other companies approached Meta asking it to sell them access to its \u200cAI models the way cloud providers \u200bdo or looking to buy its spare \u200bcomputing capacity at a \u200bpremium. <\/p>\n

“We haven’t done that yet, because we think that \u200cwe have a use for \u200bthe compute. But \u200bobviously, if we get to a point where we feel that we have overbuilt, then that is an option that \u200bwe have, and that \u200cis partially what gives us confidence in investing in \u200bbuilding this out.” <\/p>\n
