The British Museum director and art world fixture Nicholas Cullinan has been caught on canvas by Elizabeth Peyton. The US artist\u2019s evocative picture\u2014Nick at home (London),\u00a02025\u2014marks Cullinan\u2019s tenure as director of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in London (2015-24). \u201cPeyton and\u00a0Cullinan\u00a0grew close whilst working on the artist\u2019s retrospective Elizabeth Peyton: Aire and Angels\u00a0held at the NPG in 2019-2020,\u201d says an NPG statement. \u201cFor me the show I had at the NPG, Aire and Angels\u00a0was a life highlight as well as the friendship that has grown after it,\u201d Peyton added in a statement.<\/p>\n

Peyton has donated the work to the NPG, ensuring that its former chief <\/a>remains at the heart of the collection (the painting is on permanent display in Room 30). Alongside is a Kaye Donachie portrait of Erdem, the London-based, Canadian fashion designer. \u201cI have always loved the extraordinary and strange beauty of [Donachie\u2019s] work,\u201d said the creative trailblazer.
