One is because it bulks up stools by absorbing water, \u201callowing waste to pass through the colon more quickly and limiting carcinogen exposure to the colon lining,\u201d registered dietitian Christina Fasulo of UCLA\u2019s Health GI Nutrition Program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/how-fiber-supports-overall-health-and-lowers-risk-colorectal\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"told the university\u2019s Health Newsroom\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a428c80e4b0f4826b468581\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/how-fiber-supports-overall-health-and-lowers-risk-colorectal\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told the university\u2019s Health Newsroom<\/a>. <strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/causes-of-cancer\/diet-and-cancer\/wholegrains-fibre-and-cancer-risk\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"according to the Cancer Research UK website\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a428c80e4b0f4826b468581\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/causes-of-cancer\/diet-and-cancer\/wholegrains-fibre-and-cancer-risk\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the Cancer Research UK website<\/a>, is that \u201cwhen fiber meets the bacteria that lives in the bowel, the bacteria make something called butyrate,\u201d which \u201chelps the cells in our bowel to stay healthy, so tumors are less likely to develop.\u201d<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to meet our dietary fiber goals, it\u2019s important to be aware of which foods are actually high in fiber \u2014 because it\u2019s not always the ones you assume. We asked dietitians to share which foods contain less fiber than many people realize. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Not All Fiber Is Created Equal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One quick but important note before we dive in: The foods mentioned below can still be beneficial components of a healthy, well-rounded diet. As Samuels pointed out, while one cup of raw spinach contains less than 1 gram of fiber, one cup of cooked spinach contains 4 grams of fiber. That\u2019s because it takes several cups of raw spinach to make one cup of cooked spinach. Therefore, you\u2019re getting more fiber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2024\/03\/25\/among-leafy-green-powerhouses-spinach-packs-a-wallop\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"for the same serving volume\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a428c80e4b0f4826b468581\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2024\/03\/25\/among-leafy-green-powerhouses-spinach-packs-a-wallop\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for the same serving volume<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Celery <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rich in antioxidants and low in calories, celery is another veggie that seems like it would contain more fiber than it actually does. More peas, please! <\/p>\n<p><strong>Raspberries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With 8 grams of fiber per cup, Sassos called raspberries a \u201ctrue fiber superstar.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other great sources: Quinoa (5 grams of fiber in one cup cooked), broccoli (5 grams in one cup cooked), pears (6 grams for a medium-sized one) and chia seeds (5 grams in one tablespoon). <\/p>\n<p>Know that not all fiber is created equal, said Sassos. Whole food sources offer benefits that supplement forms do not. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains offer much more than fiber alone,\u201d she explained. \u201cThey provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other beneficial compounds that work together synergistically.
