Normally, the order is permitted to make its way from Portadown town to Drumcree Parish Church for a service with members then blocked from returning to the town via the nationalist Garvaghy Road.<\/p>\n
Orangemen have now notified the commission of plans for ten members to march the route at around 9am on Sunday morning. <\/p>\n It is understood to be the first time the order has ever applied for the march, which they describe as the \u2018Drumcree Civil and Religious Liberty Memorial Walk\u2019.<\/p>\n Under the plan, the order wants to make its way from Drumcree Parish Church along the entire length of the Garvaghy Road to an area known locally as Parkmount.<\/p>\n While organisers have stated the parade is due to start at \u201cthe entrance from Drumcree Road\u201d no definitive starting point has been identified, which is understood to be causing concern for residents in several mainly nationalist housing developments in the area.<\/p>\n The commission is due to consider the Orange Order notification on Friday.<\/p>\n It is understood the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition, which represents local nationalists, were to make representations to the commission on Thursday.<\/p>\n While most nationalists consider the Drumcree dispute over, and many young people have no memory of an Orange Order parade in the area, some Orangemen insist on marching through the district.<\/p>\n If the planned parade is given the go-ahead by the commission, it is likely to require a massive security response on a scale unseen in the north for decades.<\/p>\n The Drumcree stand-off, which began in 1995, sparked a series of events that resulted in the deaths of several people, including three children, over subsequent years.<\/p>\n In the first years of the dispute, the parade finally went ahead after nationalists agreed to end their protest after three days of deadlock <\/p>\n A year later the parade was banned, but after violent clashes between the RUC, Orangemen and their supporters, the decision was reversed, resulting in nationalist protesters being forcibly removed from the Garvaghy Road.<\/p>\n At the height of the 1996 stand-off, Catholic taxi driver Michael McGoldrick (31) was shot dead by members of the UVF outside Lurgan.<\/p>\n The 30th anniversary of his murder takes place next week.<\/p>\n In 1997 the Orange Order was again allowed to march along the Garvaghy Road after the area was flooded by police in the early hours of Drumcree Sunday.<\/p>\n Priests celebrated Mass in front of British army lines after local people were blocked from attending their local church.<\/p>\n In May that year, Catholic man Robert Hamill died after he was attacked by a loyalist mob in Portadown as RUC officers, who were in a Land Rover parked nearby, were accused of failing to intervene.<\/p>\n The parade dispute was also linked to a deadly sectarian arson attack carried out by the UVF in the early hours of July 12, 1998.<\/p>\n Catholic schoolboys Richard (10), Mark (9) and Jason (8) Quinn died after their home was petrol bombed in Ballymoney, Co Antrim.<\/p>\n Later that year, RUC officer Frank O\u2019Reilly died after a pipe bomb was thrown at police lines by loyalists in Portadown. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Orange Order has lodged plans to hold a second march along the nationalist Garvaghy Road.
