Earlier this month, it was confirmed that\u00a0this year\u2019s period of eligibility for albums is over a month longer<\/a>, meaning the records needed to have been released between July 13 last year and August 29, 2025.<\/p>\n

Following the announcement, many took to social media to share their thoughts on the shortlist. Leaving comments under the announcement post in praise of this year\u2019s artists, most were convinced that either Fontaines D.C. or CMAT would win this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Mercury Prize is basically the only music award I pay any attention to now. No other award show has this interesting an array of nominees, both in size and sound,\u201d wrote<\/a> one X\/Twitter user, with another on Instagram adding: \u201cBest shortlist for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, some were more reluctant to praise the final list so highly and instead honed in on those who were overlooked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo happy for CMAT, FKA Twigs and PinkPantheress,\u201d wrote one fan on Instagram. \u201cBut Self Esteem<\/a> has been well and truly ROBBED.\u201d Another added: \u201cNo [Geordie] Greep<\/a>, BCNR<\/a> or Jim Legxacy<\/a>?? Makes no sense!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Welsh indie group Los Campesinos!<\/a> pointed out that artists and labels have to submit an application with an admission fee to be considered for nomination, writing: \u201cThis understandably might discourage smaller artists! If the album\/artist you love isn\u2019t included it may be because they chose not to apply.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several fans were disappointed that records from Little Simz<\/a> (\u2018Lotus\u2019<\/a>), Wet Leg<\/a> (\u2018Moisturizer\u2019<\/a>)\u00a0and The Cure<\/a> (\u2018Songs Of A Lost World\u2019<\/a>) didn\u2019t make the list.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuitar music is coming back baby ..but no The Cure\u2026. Scandalous,\u201d said one fan on Instagram. \u201cGood to see CMAT on there,\u201d another wrote. \u201cNo Geordie Greep though? The writing and composition on that record is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The omission of \u2018The New Sound\u2019<\/a>\u00a0was a consistent gripe in the comments section, with one user writing: \u201cNo Geordie Greep?! No Laura Marling<\/a>?! Mercury Prize you\u2019ve lost your head brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right, Mercury Prize prediction time: <\/p>\n

This is a surprising list, with Jamie XX, Geordie Greep, The Cure, Self Esteem and Little Simz missing out.<\/p>\n

That said these nominees are super strong but I personally think it\u2019s between FKA Twigs and CMAT, with Jacob Alon as the dark horse https:\/\/t.co\/m0WpfI1WhE<\/a><\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s Mercury Prize was held at London\u2019s iconic Abbey Road Studios, and saw\u00a0English Teacher take home the prestigious award\u00a0<\/a>for their universally-acclaimed debut LP,\u00a0\u2018This Could Be Texas\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The former\u00a0NME\u00a0Cover stars<\/a>\u00a0were the first non-London act to bag the prize since\u00a0Edinburgh\u2019s Young Fathers won in 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Mercury Prize is moving from its traditional home in London to Newcastle this year<\/a>. This comes as part of a new partnership with Newcastle City Council and the North East Combined Authority. The ceremony will follow a week-long regional fringe programme to \u201ccelebrate the depth and diversity of talent in the north and create opportunities for local talent\u201d.<\/p>\n
