Racing was immediately stopped with a red flag, and Walsh was airlifted to hospital by air ambulance.

The Cork native had won the Junior Support race at the Tandragee 100 just hours before the fatal crash. It marks the first fatality at the Armagh event in nine years, following the death of Italian rider Dario Cecconi in 2017.

It is also the second fatal road racing incident in Northern Ireland motorcycling this year, after Czech Republic competitor Kamil Holan died at the North West 200 in May.

“We are completely heartbroken by this tragic loss, and our entire club is mourning a truly valued member of our racing community,” a statement from The North Armagh Motorcycle and Car Club (Tarmac Section) Ltd, which organises the Tandragee 100 said.

“Road racing is a sport built on shared passion and tight bonds, which makes a loss like this resonate deeply with every rider, official, and fan.

“Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with his [partner] Claire, his mum Geraldine, the rest of his family, friends, and his own club members during this incredibly devastating time.

“We want to express our immense gratitude to the MCUI UC Medical Team, the air ambulance crew, and the medical staff who fought so hard to save him.”

Just a fortnight ago, Walsh expressed his enthusiasm for the Tandragee 100 event, writing:. It’s Race week and I cannot wait. My 1st time there last year and wow what a circuit. It’s mini TT for a reason. Absolutely brilliant racing. Hopefully ill make a step up this year and get on it. Long drive up the road from Cork but it’s absolutely brilliant.”

Close friend Nick Healy paid a heartfelt tribute to Walsh on social media, saying: “Thank you to everyone that helped James and everyone who cared for him at the end.

“He was a happy soul and always smiling. He had an amazing influence in the racing world and around Cork. As everyone knows. He will be greatly missed with his chuckle and positive nature.

“I pass my deepest condolences to Claire his partner, his mother Geraldine, his family and friends . It’s been a tough few days after accident, but James is at peace now. Ride high buddy until we meet again. Keep smiling.”

West Cork Motorcycle Club also shared a moving tribute to ‘a much loved member’ of their club, stating:.

“It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of our friend, James Walsh,” said WCMC. “Over the past number of years, James dedicated so much of his time, passion, and energy to his racing. Many admired his skill and determination on the track, but it was away from the racing that James truly left his mark.

“His warm smile, kind nature, and infectious sense of humour made him someone everyone looked forward to seeing in the paddock. He was always willing to lend a hand, offer advice, or simply have a chat, whether you were a lifelong friend or a rival competitor.

“James was a much-loved member of our club and a friend to so many. His presence brought people together, and his loss will be deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“He will be remembered not only for his achievements in racing but for the kindness, generosity, and genuine friendship he showed to everyone around him.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with James’ mother Geraldine, his partner Claire, family, friends, and all who loved him during this incredibly difficult time.
