{"id":568952,"date":"2026-07-04T19:01:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T19:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/568952\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T19:01:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T19:01:21","slug":"david-andrews-was-a-man-of-integrity-who-played-vital-role-in-peace-process-funeral-hears-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/568952\/","title":{"rendered":"David Andrews was a man of integrity who played vital role in peace process, funeral hears \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> TD and minister for foreign affairs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-andrews\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-andrews\/\">David Andrews<\/a>, was described  at his funeral on Saturday as a man of great integrity and empathy who played an integral role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast-agreement\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast-agreement\/\">Belfast Agreement<\/a> in 1998. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Andrews, who died at the age of 91 on Tuesday, was a TD for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dun-laoghaire\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dun-laoghaire\/\">D\u00fan Laoghaire<\/a> from 1965 to his retirement in 2002 and served two terms as minister for foreign affairs and was also minister for the marine and minister for defence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the funeral mass at St John the Baptist Church in Blackrock, his son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-andrews\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-andrews\/\">Barry Andrews<\/a>, the MEP for Dublin, said it was \u201ca source of enormous pride\u201d for the family that David Andrews had contributed to peace on the island of Ireland, as one of the four signatories of the Belfast Agreement in 1998. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin, former president Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, were at the mass as was Captain Paul O\u2019Donnell, aide-de-camp to President Catherine Connolly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former taoiseach Bertie Ahern was also among the mourners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his eulogy, Barry said many had remarked on another of his father\u2019s qualities: empathy. He said his father believed there was a great sense of injustice in the way that Irish prisoners were treated in British jails and had been very involved in the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four campaigns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That empathy was also evident in his constituency of D\u00fan Laoghaire throughout his long career, including his involvement in pushing for social housing schemes in Ballybrack early in his career. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Barry Andrews said former president Higgins and his father were friends for many decades and it had been a great joy for his father to be invited to \u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in for lunch with the president for his 90th birthday last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey worked on human rights cases together for years. He said that on a personal level he was devoted to his children, his grandchildren, and especially his wife Annette whom he married in 1964.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe had taken charge of the children, the household accounts, and various election campaigns. She even ghostwrote most of his autobiography,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On a personal level, nothing had given his father more pleasure, said Barry, than having a pint in Tigh Johnny She\u00e1in\u2019s pub in mBaile na hAbhann in South Connemara after a day\u2019s fishing. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Ryan Tubridy, a nephew of David Andrews, at the funeral. Photograph: Alan Betson<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The chief mourners at the funeral were his wife, Annette, sons David (aka the comedian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-mcsavage\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-mcsavage\/\">David McSavage<\/a>) and Barry; daughters Mary, Sinead and Claire; his sister Catherine; daughters-in-law, son-in-law; grandchildren, sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; nieces; and nephews. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The broadcaster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryan-tubridy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryan-tubridy\/\">Ryan Tubridy<\/a>, a nephew of David Andrews, was at the funeral with his wife Clare Kambamettu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another nephew, Sinn F\u00e9in senator Chris Andrews, was also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Former president Michael D Higgins and his wife, Sabina, at the funeral of David Andrews.
