Using ice-breaking ships and the underwater robot Icefin, scientists from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) warn that the glacier’s melt may be irreversible.

Alarming new findings on Doomsday Glacier

Since 2018, international scientists have been studying Thwaites Glacier to assess its potential for full-scale collapse. Recent research highlight the gravity of the situation.

“Our findings indicate it is set to retreat further and faster,” said Rob Larter, a marine geophysicist with the British Antarctic Survey. The team’s research, which included satellite and GPS data, revealed that seawater is moving more than six miles beneath the glacier, intensifying its melting.

Historical insights and future projections

The study also uncovered that Thwaites Glacier’s retreat began in the 1940s, likely triggered by a powerful El Niño event. This was determined through analysis of marine sediment cores led by University of Houston professor Julia Wellner and her team.

Icefin’s underwater images provided a closer look at how warm ocean water funnels through deep cracks and ice formations, accelerating the glacier’s melt.

The collapse of Thwaites Glacier poses a severe global risk. If the glacier melts completely, it could raise sea levels by over two feet, with the potential for a total rise of up to 10 feet, experts say. This would have devastating effects on coastal cities like Miami and London, as well as vulnerable regions such as Bangladesh and the Pacific Islands.

Despite the grave outlook, some computer models suggest that a rapid collapse of Thwaites’ ice cliffs may be less likely than once feared.

The need for ongoing research

Scientists agree that more research is essential to fully understand Thwaites Glacier’s decline and its potential impact on global sea levels. Eric Rignot, a glaciologist from the University of California, Irvine, and a member of the ITGC team, emphasized the uncertainty that remains.

“While progress has been made, we still have deep uncertainty about the future,” Rignot said.

Further research into Thwaites is critical to developing strategies for mitigating the consequences of rising sea levels, which could have profound effects on vulnerable coastal communities worldwide.

The Thwaites Glacier, also known as the Doomsday Glacier, is melting at an accelerating rate, raising concerns about…

[77
12048,442,111765,18,19,17,133,8203
post-570732","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-science","tag-antarctica","tag-climate-change","tag-doomsday-glacier","tag-eire","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-science","tag-sea-level-rise
["GET
