(ABC Far North: Bridget Herrmann)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tailored care also means making the nearly hour-long journey to Cairns more useful for patients, aligning it so they can get grocery shopping and errands done too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s also about if they want to go down the beach for 15 minutes if they&#8217;re dying of boredom, not dying from their diagnosis,&#8221; Mr Lefoe said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iview.abc.net.au\/category\/indigenous\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NAIDOC Week 2026: 50 Years of Deadly<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ABC has gathered the best First Nations films, TV shows and documentaries to enjoy during NAIDOC Week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The community-led Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Aboriginal Corporation (GYHSAC) is delivering the $2.3 million program, funded by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">GYHSAC head of clinical services Jason King said the program, which began in April, would change the way Yarrabah residents &#8220;interact and live with cancer in the community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For the people of Yarrabah, having an opportunity to have \u2026 not just a say but to carry out the care of their own people is incredibly powerful,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The program also has a health promotion aspect, aimed at preventing cancer through culturally safe education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a reality for people who live here that you get sick, you go to the hospital, and sometimes, you don&#8217;t come back,&#8221; the clinician said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A view from above showing the beach and a line of trees next to a street lined with houses. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/b1158f24c3b8488961e4f7a0b2409beb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Yarrabah has unique health challenges driven by factors like overcrowded housing.
