And what do we mean when we talk about exercise \u201creversing\u201d or \u201cslowing\u201d ageing?<\/p>\n<p>A paper published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0036\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Journal of Sport and Health Science\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0036\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Journal of Sport and Health Science<\/a> said: \u201cCurrent evidence suggests that exercise favorably modulates all 14 hallmarks of ageing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what those markers are, as well as how exercise improves them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Genome instability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we get older, our <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7846274\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"DNA is more likely\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7846274\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" the ability to repair itself.<\/p>\n<p>This amounts to \u201cgenome instability\u201d, which has been described in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23398157\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"some research\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" ageing.<\/p>\n<p>But, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0003\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the paper reads\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0003\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" capable of promoting genome stability by reducing DNA damage and enhancing DNA damage repair\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Telomere shrinking or loss (attrition)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our telomeres \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/2015\/12\/02\/tall-people-likely-to-have-shorter-lifespan_n_8696110.html\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"DNA structures that humans have at the ends of our chromosomes\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" potential drivers of mammalian ageing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0008\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the paper said\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0008\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" bodies to express our genes in a more beneficial way, they added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccumulating evidence indicates that exercise-induced epigenetic modifications contribute to improved health outcomes in older adults\u201d by regulating things like our DNA \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3871623\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"off switches\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" methylation).<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Less effective proteostasis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Proteostasis is the short term for \u201cprotein homeostasis\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625001164#sec0015\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"It refers\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a43c5b1e4b0f4826b482a63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\"
