{"id":571796,"date":"2026-07-06T15:58:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T15:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/571796\/"},"modified":"2026-07-06T15:58:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T15:58:31","slug":"wolfe-tones-singer-brian-warfield-settles-rte-defamation-action-over-liveline-comments-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/571796\/","title":{"rendered":"Wolfe Tones singer Brian Warfield settles RT\u00c9 defamation action over Liveline comments \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wolfe-tones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wolfe-tones\/\">Wolfe Tones<\/a> lead vocalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brian-warfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brian-warfield\">Brian Warfield<\/a> has settled a defamation action taken against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\">RT\u00c9<\/a> over comments made by broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/joe-duffy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/joe-duffy\">Joe Duffy<\/a> during a Livelive segment three years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Warfield and then-Liveline host Duffy clashed during an on-air discussion on August 15th, 2023, about the Wolfe Tones song, Celtic Symphony. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Warfield initiated defamation proceedings against RT\u00c9 complaining about comments made by Duffy during the broadcast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Niall Buckley, counsel for Warfield instructed by Marie Hans of WP Tweed solicitors, on Monday told Judge Anthony Barr the case had been resolved. Buckley said the proceedings could be struck out on consent, with no order relating to legal costs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge made the order as sought. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking outside court, Warfield said the terms of his agreement with RT\u00c9 were confidential. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI can\u2019t divulge anything &#8230; regarding the settlement. We are sworn to silence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Warfield said the case had come to a \u201cfriendly conclusion\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, WP Tweed said the proceedings had concluded \u201cto [Warfield\u2019s] satisfaction\u201d, adding that their client \u201chas been totally vindicated and his reputation restored\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The firm said the settlement followed a decision by Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n, which upheld Warfield\u2019s complaint concerning the Liveline segment, and \u201cfound reasons to suspect\u201d breaches of the broadcaster\u2019s Code of Fairness, Objectivity &amp; Impartiality. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe Coimisi\u00fan found that the presenter had advanced a partisan position and moderated the discussion in a manner that did not afford Mr Warfield a fair opportunity to respond,\u201d the firm said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt further found that Mr Duffy\u2019s approach and conduct went beyond what could be considered fair treatment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RT\u00c9 has been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Wolfe Tones began playing in Dublin in 1964 and gained popularity with hits including Celtic Symphony, Irish Eyes, Grace, Streets of New York and Let The People Sing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The band has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years.
