That honor has been stripped from them: an Icelandic amateur entomologist recently found <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/mosquitoes-have-been-found-in-iceland-for-the-first-time-ever-2000675164\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>one male and two female specimens of <\/strong><strong>Culiseta annulata<\/strong><\/a> in his garden, and we must assume that they have friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This development is more than just an annoyance for the people of Iceland. <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/iceland-just-got-its-first-mosquitoes-scientists-arent-ready-for-what-comes-next-2000747401\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gizmodo reports <\/strong><\/a>that \u201cThe arrival of this pest in Iceland is a warning, Arctic researchers Amanda Koltz and Lauren Culler <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aeh9505?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D67573331065852582792073074535342621123%7CMCORGID%3D242B6472541199F70A4C98A6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1776344006\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>argue<\/strong><\/a> in a newly published editorial. It reflects a major ecological shift driven by a warming climate and the expansion of human activity across the region, causing insect species to move \u2018in new ways and at new scales.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, as they say, \u201cwhat happens in the Arctic doesn\u2019t stay in the Arctic,\u201d meaning that changes we see there will affect those of us in other regions. The researchers point vehemently to the need for robust monitoring systems for the Arctic, which is warming four times faster than other parts of the world, but also coordination across countries to recognize, anticipate, and prepare for changes. \u201cEnhancing biodiversity monitoring is a win-win,\u201d Amanda Koltz said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it\u2019s not just scientists who can participate in this.
