It has a number of subsidiaries, including LinkedIn and Activision Blizzard which employ around 2,000 and 250 people respectively. The reduction in staff is likely to have an impact on its Irish operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The $2.9 trillion (\u20ac2.5 trillion) company told staff in a memo on Monday that the roles being cut were \u201cnot being replaced by A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">I (artificial intelligence)<\/a>\u201d, but added that \u201cAI is changing how work gets done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About 3,200 of the cuts will come from the Xbox team, with 1,600 cuts immediately and a further 1,600 over the next year. The remainder of the lay-offs will be from Microsoft\u2019s commercial division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma told employees in an email that the \u201cbusiness today is not healthy\u201d, citing \u201cmargins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She called for a \u201creset\u201d of Xbox, as the industry struggles with weak hardware demand, the growth of online gaming and rising component prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The console business has slowed following the pandemic-era boom, while game developers have also faced higher development spending and AI demand has pushed up the cost of chips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/07\/01\/microsofts-irish-business-paid-56bn-in-corporation-tax-last-year\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft\u2019s Irish business paid $5.6bn in corporation tax last yearOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move comes just three years after Microsoft closed the biggest deal in its history, a $75 billion acquisition of games maker Activision Blizzard, which was intended to strengthen Xbox by expanding Microsoft\u2019s portfolio of games and helping attract subscribers to its Game Pass service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, Microsoft\u2019s shares have fallen a fifth since the start of the year as investors question whether the company will generate sufficient profits to justify its huge spending on AI.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1783114811_762_1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>The 9 per cent VAT rate has been welcomed by restaurants but does the hospitality sector actually need it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under former chief executive Phil Spencer, Xbox invested heavily in gaming studios in an attempt to encourage customers to buy its Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sharma said that \u201cwhile those businesses have created meaningful value, they did not grow at the pace we expected\u201d.
