{"id":572511,"date":"2026-07-07T01:40:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T01:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/572511\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T01:40:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T01:40:16","slug":"tributes-paid-to-two-cork-motorcycle-enthusiasts-killed-at-separate-events-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/572511\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes paid to two Cork motorcycle enthusiasts killed at separate events \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tributes have been paid to two motorcycle enthusiasts from a west <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> town who died within days of each other while competing in separate racing events. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">James Walsh from Coolvallanane Beg, Kinsale, died at the Royal Victoria Hospital in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\">Belfast<\/a> on July 3rd after an incident while competing in the Tandragee 100 Road Race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">John O\u2019Donovan from Shanavally, Kinsale, died while competing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/swords\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/swords\">Swords<\/a> 100 Road Race on July 5th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Walsh had won the Junior Support Race in Tandragee on Saturday, June 27th, but he crashed later in the Senior Support Race which was stopped with a red flag. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The North Armagh Motorcycle &amp; Car Club (Tarmac Section) Ltd, which organises the Tandragee 100, confirmed Walsh\u2019s death. \u201cWe are completely heartbroken by this tragic loss, and our entire club is mourning a truly valued member of our racing community,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRoad racing is a sport built on shared passion and tight bonds, which makes a loss like this resonate deeply with every rider, official, and fan,\u201d said the club before extending its sympathies to Walsh\u2019s family and friends during \u201cthis incredibly devastating time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Donovan was fatally injured when he crashed during the Skerries 100 at Duke\u2019s Bend, Baldongan, Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin<\/a>, at midday on Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, the Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters Club, which organises the race, said: \u201cA competitor has sadly passed away following a tragic accident that occurred during a race which took place today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Local Independent member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork-county-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork-county-council\/\">Cork County Council<\/a>, Cllr Alan Coleman said people in Kinsale and the surrounding areas were still in a state of shock as they tried to process the loss of two young men in separate accidents while competing in the sport that they loved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s desperately sad for both families \u2013 they were both involved in motorbike racing and would have known each other because the west Cork Motorcycle Club is very strong and have their big event at the Halfway every year so the sport is very strong down here,\u201d said Coleman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s a pall of sadness over Kinsale today \u2013 it was sad enough when news came through last week that James Walsh had died in Belfast and then to hear that John O\u2019Donovan had died in Skerries \u2013 it\u2019s on everyone\u2019s lips this morning \u2013 people are shocked and saddened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Walsh, who is survived by his mother, Geraldine and his partner, Claire O\u2019Shea, was a native of Skibbereen in west Cork and he will be buried at St Patrick\u2019s Cemetery, Coronea, Skibbereen, following requiem mass at St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral Skibbereen at noon on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile O\u2019Donovan, who was in his 50s, is survived by his wife, Valerie and children, Libby, Emily and Sean as well as by his mother, Mary and siblings, Margaret, Michael, Donie and Brian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Funeral details have yet to be announced for O\u2019Donovan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tributes have been paid to two motorcycle enthusiasts from a west Cork town who died within days of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":572512,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[76],"tags":[663,1877,10011,52,18,19,17,132,10411],"class_list":["post-572511","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-belfast","tag-cork","tag-cork-county-council","tag-dublin","tag-eire","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-sports","tag-swords"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@ie\/116876150499203848","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/572511","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=572511"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/572511\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/572512"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=572511"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=572511"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=572511"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
