{"id":572573,"date":"2026-07-07T02:44:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T02:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/572573\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T02:44:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T02:44:24","slug":"trai-seeks-powers-to-act-against-call-management-apps-like-truecaller-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/572573\/","title":{"rendered":"TRAI seeks powers to act against call management apps like Truecaller, others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Delhi: The telecom regulator has sought powers under the Information Technology (IT) Act to take action against <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/call-management-apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">call management apps<\/a> and digital platforms, such as <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/truecaller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Truecaller<\/a>, Hiya and Whoscall, for tagging and blocking calls originating from 1400 and 1600 as spam despite the special numbering series being assigned for commercial communications, said people with knowledge of the development.<\/p>\n<p>The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/trai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trai<\/a>) cannot take action against such platforms at present since, as intermediaries, they fall under the purview of IT Act. Officials said the electronics and IT ministry is believed to have agreed to the demand and now the DoT will initiate the next course of action.<\/p>\n<p>Queries sent to Trai remained unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said such unwanted tagging or blocking hampers legitimate commercial communications and even government initiatives. \u201cThe worst part is that due to wrongful tagging, enterprises may tend to revert to normal 10-digit numbers, thereby increasing spam and consumer distrust,\u201d said a second official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Truecaller said in response to ET\u2019s queries that it remains compliant with Trai\u2019s mandate of not <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/spam-tagging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spam tagging<\/a> or auto blocking any designated series numbers. \u201cTo clarify further, even if Truecaller has detected a particular number from the designated series as spam, we will not tag it as spam.
