{"id":572664,"date":"2026-07-07T04:09:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T04:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/572664\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T04:09:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T04:09:19","slug":"ireland-relieved-to-have-avoided-obvious-embarrassment-on-eu-stage-so-far-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/572664\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland relieved to have avoided obvious embarrassment on EU stage \u2013 so far \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">No doubt the Government has spent the past few days mopping its figurative brow in relief \u2013 as last week\u2019s opening EU presidency formalities passed off without any obvious political pratfalls or big security embarrassments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it will be a long six months, you suspect. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This week there is the potential for a Homer Simpson-esque pulling of the collective collar as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/03\/meps-to-vote-on-resolution-calling-for-ban-on-irish-exports-of-alumina-to-russia\/ \" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/03\/meps-to-vote-on-resolution-calling-for-ban-on-irish-exports-of-alumina-to-russia\/ \">MEPs vote on a resolution calling for exports to be banned<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aughinish-alumina\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aughinish-alumina\/\">Aughinish Alumina<\/a> plant in Limerick to Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The resolution follows calls for the European Union to take action against such exports to Moscow \u2013 where an investigation by this newspaper found they were making their way into the hands of Russian arms manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Miche\u00e1l Martin is due to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg tomorrow, in advance of the debate, about Ireland\u2019s priorities for the presidency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among those keen to shut down the operation (the export of alumina \u2013 not Martin\u2019s speech) is Ukrainian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It\u2019s all part of a drive to expand the sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression against Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for State Neale Richmond was out to bat for the Coalition over the weekend and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/07\/05\/government-investigation-into-aughinish-alumina-not-stalling-minister-says\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/07\/05\/government-investigation-into-aughinish-alumina-not-stalling-minister-says\/\">he denied<\/a> to RT\u00c9 that Ireland\u2019s investigation into the supply chain was a \u201cstalling\u201d exercise \u2013 and pointed out that alumina wasn\u2019t yet a sanctioned product. He said that if it were to become one, then Ireland would do as it should.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The resolution before the European Parliament will be little more than a symbolic gesture, however, and it is entirely up to the European Commission and Ireland as to whether such action is taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2026\/07\/06\/russian-missile-and-drone-attacks-on-kyiv-kill-at-least-nine-people\/ \" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2026\/07\/06\/russian-missile-and-drone-attacks-on-kyiv-kill-at-least-nine-people\/ \">a further round of attacks<\/a> on Kyiv overnight \u2013 with at least 14 people reported dead and dozens injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ukraine will get a good airing in Turkey this week, with the Nato members in town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tuesday and Wednesday will see much discussion about the possibility of giving Ukraine further air defences mixed with, quite possibly, terrible anxiety about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/07\/05\/putin-and-trump-discuss-ukraine-in-call-ahead-of-nato-summit\/ \" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/07\/05\/putin-and-trump-discuss-ukraine-in-call-ahead-of-nato-summit\/ \">what Donald Trump might say<\/a> next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US president has, of course, demanded that Nato\u2019s European members do more spending on defence while suggesting he\u2019d like to reduce the number of US troops stationed on the Continent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was on the blower to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> over the weekend, with the Russian leader making sure to congratulate him on his country\u2019s 250th anniversary. In an 85-minute phone call the two men also discussed the future of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Zelenskiy will be in Ankara, where he is expected to meet Trump on Wednesday. The Nato secretary general Mark Rutte\u2019s nerves could well be at him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking of a geopolitical bear pit, the Minister for Foreign Affairs will find herself in the Gulf region this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/helen-mcentee\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/helen-mcentee\/\">Helen McEntee<\/a> flew in yesterday, with meetings in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSolidarity\u201d was the word she used to describe Ireland\u2019s positioning vis-a-vis the above nations \u2013 and she commended them for the \u201crestraint\u201d they had shown in the face of Iranian attacks on their territories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All important economic ties between Ireland and friends in the Gulf will also be touched upon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Economic affairs will be to the fore on Friday too, with the T\u00e1naiste due to chair a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council in Brussels. Simon Harris is due to present Ireland\u2019s \u201cwork programme\u201d in the field of said affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council will be having a debate about Europe\u2019s saving and investment union \u2013 and such things are close to Harris\u2019s heart right now.<\/p>\n<p>Public sector pay<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At home, however, the largesse available to the Government is being eyed by unions \u2013 who are demanding meaningful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/06\/calleary-appeals-to-unions-to-join-pay-talks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/06\/calleary-appeals-to-unions-to-join-pay-talks\/\">talks about a new public sector pay deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Siptu has been readying its members for potential industrial action after telling them the basis for negotiations does not exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/06\/calleary-appeals-to-unions-to-join-pay-talks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/06\/calleary-appeals-to-unions-to-join-pay-talks\/\">appealed for discussions to take place<\/a> and said his colleague Jack Chambers was on hand to chew the fat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ballots are being prepared as the dance unfolds.
