(WJRT) – Cyclosporiasis is spreading across Michigan at a staggering rate, with 678 total cases reported as of Monday.

Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian said that’s a spike of over 100 cases since July 4.

“It takes about a week, sometimes longer, for the symptoms to develop,” Bagdasarian said.

She explained that the weekend increase likely isn’t related to holiday travel because it takes time for the illness to show.

The influx of reported cases may actually be a good sign because it means word is spreading about the parasite.

“As people were learning about this disease, I think it’s likely that a lot of people went to see their health care provider to get tested,” Bagdasarian said. “That likely explains why the numbers are going up.”

Cyclosporiasis is spread through parasites in improperly washed produce and can cause frequent diarrhea, appetite loss, nausea and fevers. Symptoms can be more severe and last longer in those with weakened immune systems.

Diarrhea-causing parasite that can contaminate raw produce causing misery across several states

For that reason, Bagdasarian recommends caution when eating out.

“If you’re going out to eat or to a restaurant, I would ask and say, ‘have you seen the guidance on Cyclospora and are you following that guidance?'” she said.

Michigan Health and Human Services recommends cooking produce when possible and ensuring that it’s been properly washed.

Information on washing techniques can be found on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ website.

Bagdasarian said they haven’t been able to trace a common source of the outbreak yet.

Part of the reason is because of budget cuts, she said.

“Public health is having to do much more with fewer resources, in 2026, than ever before,” Bagdasarian said.

Health officials say you should reach out to your health care provider for testing if you’re experiencing symptoms.
