{"id":57343,"date":"2025-09-11T13:25:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/57343\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T13:25:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:25:08","slug":"almost-400-national-lottery-prizes-may-have-gone-unclaimed-due-to-technical-glitch-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/57343\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost 400 National Lottery prizes may have gone unclaimed due to technical glitch \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Almost 400 prizes may have gone unclaimed due to a technical glitch on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-lottery\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-lottery\">National Lottery<\/a> website that indicated players with winning numbers had not won anything, it has emerged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Minister for Public Expenditure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\">Jack Chambers<\/a> said the regulator of the National Lottery had last year withheld \u20ac23,000 from the operator, Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI), as a result of the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an answer to a written parliamentary question this week, the Minister said that during a six -week period in 2022, the Check My Numbers facility on the National Lottery website became available at times when draw results were still being verified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As a result \u201csome players received a \u2018Ticket not a winner\u2019 message when, in fact, the numbers they had entered were winning numbers in the draw that had just taken place and was still being verified\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis may have contributed to up to 394 prizes going unclaimed, though there was no noticeable increase in the rate of unclaimed prizes. The total value of the unclaimed prizes that might not have been claimed due to this incident was at most \u20ac2,299; one \u20ac250 prize and all others ranging from \u20ac24 down to \u20ac2\u201d, the Minister told Aiden Farrelly of the Social Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister said a permanent fix had been installed so the technical glitch could not recur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe \u20ac2,299 unclaimed prizes potentially affected was returned to players as prizes in other National Lottery games. The regulator withheld \u20ac23,000 in payments due to the operator and transferred this amount to the exchequer for good causes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">PLI said it had discovered the issue with the website and reported it to the regulator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPLI can confirm that it did not receive any customer complaints in relation to this isolated incident nor were unclaimed prize rates above normal levels.
