Flutter Entertainment internally announced redundancies at its PokerStars division earlier today (7 July) as part of a wider restructuring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

NEXT.io has learned the global online gaming and sports betting operator will be making redundancies to its PokerStar teams worldwide as part of a wider operational restructuring of the brand.<\/p>\n

NEXT.io understands the cuts \u2013 confirmed by multiple people familiar with the matter \u2013 will affect staff across its global hubs in Canada, Europe, the UK and Ireland, although exact numbers are unknown at this stage.<\/p>\n

It comes after Flutter had faced headwinds after UK Remote Gaming Duty nearly doubled in April to 40%<\/a>, as well as from other threats internationally including the rise of crypto operators and prediction markets.<\/p>\n

Confirming the story to NEXT.io, a PokerStars spokesperson said: \u201cPokerStars can confirm that it is proposing a number of organisational changes as part of its ongoing transformation programme, which includes integrating its online poker offering with Flutter\u2019s leading brands to better serve customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson outlined that the move reflects a shift to a more locally focused operating model as it responds to an increasingly complex regulatory and competitive landscape across its markets.<\/p>\n

They added: \u201cWhile we have sought to minimise the impact on colleagues, including through opportunities for redeployment, the proposals will unfortunately result in a number of roles being affected. We are communicating with those impacted as part of the process and will provide them with the support they need throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Online poker not what it was<\/p>\n

Many have argued online poker is a shadow of its former self when compared with its heyday during the mid-Noughties poker boom, which ended after the US clamped down on grey market platforms including through executive arrests.<\/p>\n

More recently, the nature of online poker has meant it is a vertical that has become peculiarly susceptible to AI disruption and cheating.<\/p>\n

Flutter itself has acknowledged issues with PokerStars, for instance in its 2025 annual report it outlined a $725m impairment loss to the trademark.<\/p>\n

This followed a strategic review into the operations, which aimed to maximise the brand\u2019s assets by leveraging the wider group\u2019s tech and marketing, combining \u201cglobal scale with local presence\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the report, Flutter wrote: \u201cA decision was made in December 2023 to move away from the existing capital intensive PokerStars technology in order to improve efficiency and performance of the business by leveraging technology and marketing resources across the group, thereby unlocking synergies with other Flutter brands.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, NEXT.io broke the story<\/a> that Flutter had opened a formal consultation process with over 100 PokerStars employees with job losses expected, with commercial and marketing roles expected to be among the most affected.<\/p>\n
