{"id":574586,"date":"2026-07-08T06:12:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T06:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/574586\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T06:12:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T06:12:13","slug":"could-glp-1-drugs-reduce-breast-cancer-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/574586\/","title":{"rendered":"Could GLP-1 Drugs Reduce Breast Cancer Risk?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GLP-1\u00a0medications\u00a0are best known for\u00a0their use in\u00a0obesity and diabetes\u00a0treatment, but new research suggests they may have potential\u00a0in\u00a0cancer prevention.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2026\/jun\/02\/weight-loss-drugs-cut-cancer-risk-studies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0The Guardian, multiple studies presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology\u2019s annual meeting linked GLP-1 drugs to lower rates of breast cancer, better survival outcomes when combined with standard breast cancer treatment, and decreased odds of the cancer spreading in several major tumor types.<\/p>\n<p>While the findings are\u00a0still\u00a0early,\u00a0they\u00a0could inspire further\u00a0research\u00a0to\u00a0determine\u00a0if\u00a0GLP-1s\u2019\u00a0benefits\u00a0could\u00a0extend\u00a0into the biology of cancer itself.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0I spoke\u00a0with several\u00a0medical\u00a0experts\u00a0who\u00a0view\u00a0these\u00a0findings\u00a0as\u00a0a signal\u00a0\u2013\u00a0not a reason to prescribe GLP-1s for cancer prevention\u00a0without\u00a0additional\u00a0evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings are raising important questions, but they should not be interpreted to mean that GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer,\u201d said\u00a0Dr. Monique Gary,\u00a0a\u00a0breast surgical oncologist in the St. Luke\u2019s University Health Network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese drugs are not approved for cancer treatment, they come with their own risks and considerations, and we still have much to learn about what may be driving the associations we\u2019re seeing,\u201d\u00a0Gary\u00a0told\u00a0FI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.performancefoodservice.com\/?utm_source=The+Food+Institute&amp;utm_medium=enews+%26+web+banner+ad&amp;utm_campaign=The+Food+Institute_PFS&amp;utm_id=TFI_March26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/TFI_website_900x180.jpg\" data-eio-rwidth=\"900\" data-eio-rheight=\"180\" src-webp=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/TFI_website_900x180.jpg.webp\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though\u00a0GLP-1s\u00a0were initially developed\u00a0to\u00a0treat\u00a0type 2 diabetes,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0widely used for weight management\u00a0today, as\u00a0they\u00a0mimic a hormone that regulates\u00a0blood sugar and appetite.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are now\u00a0studying whether their\u00a0impact on weight, inflammation, and other metabolic pathways could affect cancer outcomes, given that\u00a0excess weight\u00a0\u2013\u00a0especially\u00a0post-menopause\u00a0\u2013\u00a0is known\u00a0to increase\u00a0breast cancer\u00a0risk.<\/p>\n<p>One retrospective analysis of\u00a0110,000 women\u00a0ages 45-80 found\u00a0that\u00a0those\u00a0taking\u00a0GLP-1s were 30% less likely to develop breast cancer than those who didn\u2019t, while another study of 27,000 breast cancer patients found that adding\u00a0these\u00a0drugs to standard\u00a0cancer\u00a0treatment was associated with a 30%\u00a0lower\u00a0death\u00a0risk.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a\u00a0third study of 12,000 patients with breast, lung, bowel, or liver cancer\u00a0found that\u00a0individuals taking\u00a0weight-loss drugs were 38-50% less likely to develop stage-four forms of their respective\u00a0diseases\u00a0than those who\u00a0weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0consistency across studies has caught clinicians\u2019 attention,\u00a0though\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to\u00a0remember\u00a0perhaps the\u00a0most important research tenet\u00a0when\u00a0considering these\u00a0findings:\u00a0that\u00a0correlation\u00a0does\u00a0not equal\u00a0causation.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Andrew Shapiro, a board-certified\u00a0surgeon\u00a0and Medical Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Wellington Regional Medical\u00a0Center\u00a0believes\u00a0the\u00a0research\u00a0question\u00a0has become\u00a0less\u00a0about\u00a0if\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a signal and more\u00a0about\u00a0what\u00a0it means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing enough consistency across studies that I suspect we will\u00a0ultimately identify\u00a0a meaningful role for GLP-1 therapies somewhere in the breast cancer continuum. The challenge is defining where they fit, which patients benefit most, and whether the effect is related to weight loss, metabolic health, inflammation, direct biologic effects, or\u00a0a\u00a0combination of factors,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0told\u00a0FI.<\/p>\n<p>For now,\u00a0Shapiro\u00a0says\u00a0he\u2019d\u00a0be comfortable recommending GLP-1s to patients\u00a0already\u00a0facing\u00a0obesity, diabetes,\u00a0and\/or other metabolic risk factors\u00a0\u2013\u00a0but not specifically as a breast cancer prevention strategy\u00a0just yet.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-567863 alignright lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load\" alt=\"breast cancer, unity, women, prevention, health, awareness, breast cancer, breast cancer, breast cancer, breast cancer, breast cancer\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684-300x200.jpg\"  data- data-eio-rwidth=\"300\" data-eio-rheight=\"200\" src-webp=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684-300x200.jpg.webp\" srcset-webp=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684-300x200.jpg.webp 300w, https:\/\/foodinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684-1024x682.jpg.webp 1024w, https:\/\/foodinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684-768x512.jpg.webp 768w, https:\/\/foodinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684-600x400.jpg.webp 600w, https:\/\/foodinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6701684.jpg.webp 1280w\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0some experts believe the cancer-related benefits\u00a0are\u00a0largely tied\u00a0to weight loss, which\u00a0can\u00a0reduce cancer risk on its own, others suspect GLP-1s\u00a0may\u00a0have\u00a0additional\u00a0effects\u00a0like\u00a0lowering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodinstitute.com\/focus\/the-true-anti-inflammation-diet-according-to-research\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic inflammation<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0impacting\u00a0tumor-related pathways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA central question arising from this research is the \u2018how\u2019 and \u2018why.\u2019 We know obesity is a significant risk factor for cancer, so the substantial weight loss induced by these drugs is undoubtedly a major contributor to the reduced risk,\u201d\u00a0said Dr. Deena Graham,\u00a0a\u00a0breast medical oncologist\u00a0at\u00a0John Theurer Cancer Center\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Hackensack University Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the data also suggests that the drugs\u2019 anti-inflammatory properties and other metabolic effects might be inhibiting tumor growth directly, independent of weight loss,\u201d\u00a0Graham told\u00a0FI.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Shockley, a board-certified surgeon at Advanced Surgical Physicians, also\u00a0highlighted\u00a0weight loss and inflammation as\u00a0likely drivers\u00a0but\u00a0remains\u00a0open to\u00a0the possibility that GLP-1s could\u00a0help for other reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new data should be considered in this individualized approach and discussion, but I do not think a causative relationship has been established where the overall guidelines\u00a0to\u00a0managing these patients should be changed,\u201d Shockley\u00a0told\u00a0FI.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, these\u00a0studies\u00a0appear to have\u00a0raised\u00a0more questions than\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0answered.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0they\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0that\u00a0GLP-1s\u00a0are increasingly\u00a0solidifying their\u00a0place\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0broader conversation, which\u00a0may\u00a0go\u00a0beyond obesity and diabetes\u00a0to\u00a0encompass both\u00a0cancer prevention\u00a0and\u00a0survival.\u00a0Only time \u2013 and\u00a0additional\u00a0evidence \u2013 will tell.<\/p>\n<p>Food for Thought Leadership<\/p>\n<p>Food retail is undergoing a fundamental transformation, and few people have a better vantage point than the <strong>SupermarketGuru Phil Lempert<\/strong>.
