{"id":57517,"date":"2025-09-11T15:07:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T15:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/57517\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T15:07:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T15:07:10","slug":"china-backs-three-gorges-megaproject-in-investment-push-hot-on-heels-of-giant-tibet-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/57517\/","title":{"rendered":"China backs Three Gorges megaproject in investment push, hot on heels of giant Tibet dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China\u2019s top economic planner has flagged a megaproject to expand shipping capacity on the Three Gorges, slated to span the coming five-year plan, while also calling for greater investment to drive strategic initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>In a report submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People\u2019s Congress on Wednesday, Zheng Shanjie, chairman of the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/national-development-and-reform-commission?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)<\/a>, underscored the need to push major infrastructure projects such as the new shipping channel on the Three Gorges, state news agency Xinhua reported.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The project would ease traffic at the Three Gorges-Gezhouba hub \u2013 a strategic link in the Yangtze Economic Belt \u2013 by building a new double-line, five-stage lock system and increasing Gezhouba\u2019s shipping capacity, according to the NDRC and bidding documents.<\/p>\n<p>The nod to the project came as Beijing weighs the trade-off between <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3318450\/actionable-results-new-ideas-needed-boost-chinas-consumption-no-4-official-says?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">boosting consumption<\/a> and its traditional reliance on infrastructure-led growth, as it seeks to revive domestic demand amid rising global uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A May report by the NDRC, which oversees and approves major national projects, described it as \u201cthe biggest integrated project on the Yangtze River since the Three Gorges Dam, combining water management, navigation and ecological functions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A June bidding announcement estimated the total investment at about 76.6 billion yuan (US$10.7 billion), with a construction period of more than eight years plus an additional 12-month preparatory phase.
