This unconventional preworkout might already be in your pantry \u2014 and you don\u2019t even have to eat it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/physiology\/articles\/10.3389\/fphys.2026.1834757\/full#s1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sports researchers in Malaysia<\/a> found that offering a whiff of chocolate to people while working out helped them increase their performance during leg exercises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know olfaction is powerfully wired into the brain\u2019s appetite and emotion networks, but surprisingly, no study has systematically looked at the three-way interaction between smell, appetite and actual resistance exercise capacity,\u201d Mohamed Nashrudin bin Naharudin, senior author of the study, said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>Smelling chocolate is enough to boost performance at the gym, a study showed. Prostock-studio \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Training with chocolate<\/p>\n<p>Researchers had 23 young men in their early to mid-20s come in bright and early for a workout before their first meal.<\/p>\n<p>They were divided into three groups: one group was given liquid dark chocolate with 90% cocoa to smell, another liquid was given milk chocolate with 60% cocoa and the third was given water.<\/p>\n<p>The men were asked to do leg extensions, in which they sat in a chair and lifted up a weighted bar resting on their shin.<\/p>\n<p>After sniffing dark chocolate, they were able to add 18 more reps. Following a whiff of milk chocolate, they did nine more reps.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, they didn\u2019t feel like they were exerting themselves more after the chocolate-scented hit. That \u201cis a fascinating psychobiological outcome,\u201d Nashrudin\u00a0Naharudin said.<\/p>\n<p>They also reported less hunger, more fullness and less desire to eat after sniffing the dark chocolate. While the milk chocolate smelled more pleasant, it didn\u2019t change their hunger or appetite.<\/p>\n<p>Leg extensions require the user to lift a weighted bar on their shin. Seventyfour \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Why does this work?<\/p>\n<p>Feeling full <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34872065\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is associated<\/a> with better athletic performance. What this study suggest is that you don\u2019t actually necessarily have to eat to get that feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dark chocolate scent serves as a learned cue for a rich, bitter and highly satiating food, which essentially tricks the system into an anticipatory state of fullness,\u201d Nashrudin\u00a0Naharudin said. Meanwhile, his team believes the milk chocolate works by making the workout environment a little bit more pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>They also believe that the smell of food might kickstart the digestive process in anticipation of a meal, mimicking effects of actually eating. And it\u2019s possible that a whiff of foods other than chocolate might have the same effect.<\/p>\n<p>For those working out before breakfast, this could be a helpful hack to curb appetite until after the workout. AntonioDiaz \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t think chocolate is entirely unique, though it is a food cue with incredibly strong, universally recognized reward associations,\u201d Nashrudin\u00a0Naharudin said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA person likely needs to find the odor familiar and appealing \u2014 or at least not repulsive \u2014 to trigger the psychological shift in appetite that\u2019s needed to see a performance boost,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>How can gym rats use this? Timing eating around a workout can be tricky. You want to be fueled up for a workout, but also you don\u2019t want to feel overfull or have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loseit.com\/articles\/the-effects-of-eating-junk-food-on-exercising\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eaten the wrong <\/a>food that will make you feel sluggish or nauseous while exercising.<\/p>\n<p>Many people work out first thing in the morning to avoid this. Research suggests that as many as <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ejsc.12170\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">38% of athletes<\/a> opt to train before their first meal of the day because they believe it would help their body composition and performance. Plus, people may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212267224002545\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">working out while on a intermittent fasting<\/a> schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Sniffing chocolate (or other foods) could be a useful tool for people, who are fueled enough to workout but don\u2019t plan to eat until after.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Skip the protein shakes.
