{"id":577505,"date":"2026-07-09T20:56:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T20:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/577505\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T20:56:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T20:56:21","slug":"juliette-binoche-wants-to-direct-fiction-film-recalls-oscar-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/577505\/","title":{"rendered":"Juliette Binoche Wants to Direct Fiction Film, Recalls Oscar Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/juliette-binoche\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juliette Binoche<\/a> brought her star power and French flair to a packed talk on Thursday, reflecting on her career, her craft and her next moves at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/jafar-panahi-nader-saeivar-film-kviff-central-stage-1236296648\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Karlovy Vary International Film Festival<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/karlovy-vary-2026-anniversary-vaclav-havel-ken-loach-film-1236569460\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">60th edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe occasion carries some weight: on Saturday, the French star \u2014 winner of an Oscar, a C\u00e9sar and four European Film Awards \u2014 will receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/kviff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KVIFF<\/a>\u2018s Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contributions to world cinema, the festival\u2019s highest honor. To mark the occasion, the fest is also screening Certified Copy (2010), Three Colors: Blue (1993) and In-I in Motion (2025), the documentary she directed and stars in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHer Thursday talk, moderated by Variety\u2018s Marta Balaga, addressed that doc, which chronicles her 2007 artistic collaboration with British dancer and choreographer Akram Khan, blending dance and theater to explore the emotional highs and lows of a romantic relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe audience wondered if, just like dance, she would like to try anything else that\u2019s new for her. \u201cTrying [to direct] fiction would be something for me, so I\u2019m working on it, but it\u2019s going to take some time,\u201d Binoche replied, without sharing further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAsked if she could possibly direct a theater production, Binoche again mentioned a potential return to film directing: \u201cI think I want to try one film as a fiction, and then from there, we\u2019ll see.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn what\u2019s next, Binoche pointed to a new collaboration with Turkish writer-director Berkun Oya on Merci, Charlotte (Thank You, Charlotte). \u201cIt\u2019s his third film,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to start shooting at the end of August.\u201d The film casts Binoche as a French woman who adopts a Turkish child \u2014 a story, she suggested, built around the collision of two very different worlds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe French star also recalled her famously brief Oscar acceptance speech in 1997, when she won the best supporting actress award for her work in The English Patient. \u201cI [was] so surprised. I didn\u2019t prepare anything,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI thought Lauren was going to get it.\u201d Indeed, Lauren Bacall was nominated that year in the same category for The Mirror Has Two Faces. Asked about that Oscar experience on Thursday, Binoche reiterated: \u201cI thought she was going to win. Everybody did, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDid she experience the Oscar win as a life-changing event? \u201cNo, it\u2019s simpler than that,\u201d she said. \u201cYou try to survive the demands of being in front of everyone. When you come back on the sides of the stage, it\u2019s all black, you\u2019ve been in the light, [then] it\u2019s all black, and all of a sudden you have all the flashes coming \u2026 and [photographers] taking pictures. It\u2019s like you\u2019re not a human being. It\u2019s like discovering a space that is quite overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe saved her most expansive answer for the simplest question \u2014 what acting means to her. \u201cAt the end of the day, it\u2019s really about giving yourself and sharing what we go through as human beings,\u201d Binoche offered. \u201cIt allows you to expose yourself \u2026 with others. \u2026 It\u2019s not always easy, but it\u2019s a passion. It\u2019s a responsibility as well as an exploration of humankind, and of yourself.
