{"id":577777,"date":"2026-07-10T00:24:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T00:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/577777\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T00:24:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T00:24:12","slug":"businesses-at-an-sraith-salach-in-connemara-destroyed-by-fire-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/577777\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses at An Sraith Salach in Connemara destroyed by fire \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Emergency services tended to a fire at a large commercial premises in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/connemara\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/connemara\">Connemara<\/a> village of An Sraith Salach in the early hours of Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Most of the affected building was burned, according to local Fianna F\u00e1il Cllr Gerry King, who said the pub, grocery store, post office and craft shop situated at the site were \u201cinternally all destroyed\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He described the incident at Recess in Connemara, Co Galway as a \u201cmajor loss to the area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis [is] the last thing you ever think of happening,\u201d he said, adding that receiving news of the incident had been \u201cfrightening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">King visited the scene in the afternoon, after it was declared safe, and said members of the Joyce family who ran the businesses were \u201coverwhelmed by the amount of support from the community\u201d and \u201ccouldn\u2019t praise the fire service enough for doing what they did\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed said they \u201cassisted the fire brigade at a fire in a commercial building on the N59 in Recess, Co Galway, at about 4:45am.
