Ahead of her special event, Hema Malini: Live in Concert, the actress opened up on the different phases of her life and career. She also spoke about the unwavering encouragement she received from her late husband, Dharmendra<\/a>, throughout the years.From dominating the silver screen during the 1970s and 1980s to balancing dance performances and public service, Hema said her life has continued to evolve with time. Sharing her thoughts, she said, \u201cMy journey has always been that, from time to time, whatever is meant to happen, happens. I was in full swing during the ’70s and ’80s. I did a lot of work. After a short gap, I did ‘Baghban’ and one or two more films. But I have been busy with many other activities, like dance shows and more. Then I became a Member of Parliament, so my life has continued to evolve. I am always among the people. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the public. Earlier, I used to entertain people through my films, ballets, and performances. Now, I would say I have the privilege of serving the people of Mathura.\u201d<\/p>\n

The timeless legacy of Basanti<\/p>\n

Hema Malini also spoke about the lasting impact of her iconic characters, particularly Basanti from ‘Sholay’. According to the actress, audiences continue to associate her with the beloved role even today. She revealed that people she meets during her public engagements often request her to recreate Basanti’s memorable dialogues. The actress said those cherished memories continue to remain close to her heart. Recalling those moments, she shared, \u201cI am enjoying every part of this journey. That is why you all still remember me. The moment people see me, they are reminded of Basanti. My constituents often ask me, \u201cPlease say one of Basanti\u2019s dialogues.\u201d Those memories are always alive, and I carry them with me wherever I go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dharmendra’s words of encouragement<\/p>\n

Speaking about Dharmendra, Hema Malini said he always inspired her to remain active creatively, even when she reduced the number of films she accepted. Rather than focusing only on acting, he encouraged her to continue with dance performances and other artistic pursuits. She said his positive outlook motivated her to stay engaged with work and never feel that a slower pace in films meant the end of her career. Sharing his advice, Hema said, \u201cDharam Ji always used to tell me, ‘Never think that just because you’re doing fewer films, it’s the end of the road. You’re doing your dance performances and so many other things just keep going. It’s wonderful. He was always very encouraging and inspiring by the fact that I was constantly performing or keeping myself engaged in one activity or another. He genuinely appreciated it and would always say, ‘Just keep doing all of this. Don’t stop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

A celebrated partnership on and off screen<\/p>\n

Hema Malini and Dharmendra married in 1979 through a private Nikah ceremony before later solemnising their relationship in a traditional Iyengar wedding in 1980, honouring her family’s customs.
