{"id":57948,"date":"2025-09-11T19:31:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T19:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/57948\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T19:31:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T19:31:07","slug":"man-89-appears-in-court-charged-with-44-counts-of-indecent-assault-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/57948\/","title":{"rendered":"Man (89) appears in court charged with 44 counts of indecent assault \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">An 89-year-old man  has appeared in court in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/laois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/laois\/\">Co Laois<\/a> accused of historic sexual abuse offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The  man, who cannot be identified by order of the court, appeared before Judge Andrew Cody  at Portlaoise District Court on Thursday charged with 44 counts of indecent assault. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Det Gda Elaine Conlon, attached to Portlaoise Garda station, gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Det Gda Conlon said she charged the man on Thursday at 11.05am. His response to the charges, she said, was: \u201cI deny every one of them, they are complete lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Appearing for the man, solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client is  serving a prison sentence, due to expire in 2027. Mr Fitzgerald made an application for legal aid, which was granted by the judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Judge Cody adjourned the matter to a date in October, when a book of evidence is due to be served on the man. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An 89-year-old man has appeared in court in Co Laois accused of historic sexual abuse offences.
