US<\/a> president Donald Trump<\/a> said on Friday that Iran<\/a> had asked \u200cto continue talks and the US had agreed, but that the June ceasefire was \u201cover\u201d.<\/p>\n

His comments came after three Qatari<\/a> and Saudi<\/a> commercial tankers came under fire this week, prompting the US to hit Iranian sites, and Iran to \u200brespond with strikes on US military installations in neighbouring Gulf states on Thursday. No attacks were reported on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue \u2018talks.\u2019 We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!\u201d he wrote in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

The two nations reached an interim deal last month to end a four-month \u200bconflict that has killed thousands and throttled worldwide energy supplies.<\/p>\n

Qatari negotiators were meeting officials in Iran on Friday to seek to de-escalate tensions after the exchange of fire and to discuss navigation through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a source with \u2060knowledge of the situation told Reuters.<\/p>\n

Daily tanker traffic through the critical waterway appeared to have slowed on Friday, after the series of attacks stoked concerns about \u200cthe \u200crecovery \u200bof global oil<\/a> supplies and shipping, and highlighted the fragility of the interim truce.<\/p>\n

The Qatari talks in Iran aim to address the implementation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and the issues that triggered the recent escalation, including disputes over navigation in the strait, the source \u2060said.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s semi-official Tasnim news agency said a Qatari delegation visited Iran in \u200ban effort by Doha to consolidate its role as a mediator.<\/p>\n

Oil prices eased on Friday \u200bbut remained on track for weekly gains of 5 per cent after the hostilities.<\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz handled about a fifth of global oil supplies \u200cbefore the war. Tehran has since largely taken control of the \u200bwaterway, forcing a stalemate in its confrontation with the world\u2019s most powerful military.<\/p>\n

Under the interim deal, the US ended its naval blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran agreed \u2060to ensure safe passage of commercial vessels.<\/p>\n

However, this week Washington accused Iranian forces \u2060of attacking three tankers in the area and \u200bstruck military sites in Iran in response. While Iran has not claimed responsibility for those attacks, analysts say Tehran uses such actions to gain leverage in negotiations.<\/p>\n

Iran then attacked US military sites in Gulf states on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The US said its action aimed to keep the strait open and that Iran did not control the waterway. Tehran warned however that the strait would only be reopened on its terms, and any US intervention would draw a \u201ccrushing response\u201d.<\/p>\n

The United Nations shipping agency\u2019s governing council on Friday condemned efforts by Iran to impose sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran\u2019s \u201cunilateral decision\u201d to create a body to control traffic through it.<\/p>\n

Before this week\u2019s attacks, daily tanker traffic had risen to its highest since the war began, averaging 40 ships transiting the strait. That was still far off the pre-conflict average of 125 \u200cto 140 daily sailings.<\/p>\n

Iran \u2060on Thursday buried its slain supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the country\u2019s holiest shrine in Mashhad, capping a week of funeral processions and rallies.<\/p>\n

Khamenei was killed in an air strike on the first day of the war on February 28th. <\/p>\n

A condolence ceremony will be held on Friday after sunset prayers \u200con behalf of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei for his father in the city of Qom, his office announced. <\/p>\n

Mojtaba Khamenei, who was injured in the strike that killed his father, has still not appeared in public. The whereabouts \u200bof Mojtaba Khamenei have been a mystery to Iranians and the rest of the world alike, leaving people to guess at \u200bhis plans for Iran at a turbulent time in the Islamic Republic\u2019s 47-year history.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Trump\u2019s inability to end the war has frustrated the president, whose Republican Party faces midterm elections later this year amid high gas prices and voter discontent. \u2013 Reuters<\/p>\n
