Bibury\u00a0Animation Studio\u2019s\u00a0Chainsmoker\u00a0Cat\u00a0<\/strong>(Yani Neko), based on the original manga series by\u00a0NyanNyanFactory, started\u00a0airing last week. The anime\u2019s\u00a0harrowing\u00a0depictions\u00a0of\u00a0addiction,\u00a0juxtaposed\u00a0with\u00a0slapstick poop humor,\u00a0have made it one of this season\u2019s most fervently discussed titles,\u00a0and it has certainly been\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cnew\u201d\u00a0experience\u00a0for its Japanese voice cast\u00a0as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0pre-premiere\u00a0interview<\/a>,\u00a0seiyuu\u00a0Yuko Natsuyoshi, who voices the titular\u00a0protagonist, talked about\u00a0her role and thoughts on\u00a0Yaniko\u2019s\u00a0character.\u00a0As she had been reading the manga herself before the anime was announced, she admits that her first reaction to being cast\u00a0was\u00a0a mix of happiness and a\u00a0feeling of\u00a0\u201cWhy did I get this role?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Commenting on the\u00a0Chainsmoker\u00a0Cat\u2019s original manga, she says \u201cThe story is outrageous, and you can\u00a0basically\u00a0smell\u00a0the cigarette\u00a0smoke\u00a0wafting through the\u00a0screen, but\u00a0I think it\u00a0has a certain\u00a0magnetic\u00a0pull that makes you keep reading. All the characters are terrible people, but I like how\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0all charming in their own\u00a0ways.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Natsuyoshi\u00a0shares a similar\u00a0opinion of her own character Yaniko, whom she describes as delightfully nonchalant.\u00a0\u201cSince she has no attachments, she seems to enjoy her day-to-day life in her run-down apartment, and even when she goes through something horrible, she\u2019ll cry her eyes out for a moment, only to be back to casually puffing on a cigarette the next\u2026 But when it comes to her sister Imoko-chan, she shows a bit of familial love, or rather, she\u2019s such a\u00a0complete\u00a0mess\u00a0of\u00a0a person that she doesn\u2019t help Imoko-chan\u00a0one bit, yet she still tries to act like a big sister in some way.\u00a0I think her charm\u00a0lies in the fact that\u00a0you just\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0hate her,\u00a0despite\u00a0everything.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked about what\u00a0actually working\u00a0on the anime was like, Natsuyoshi says normally \u201cforbidden\u201d words were flying about during recording sessions to the point that she was worried\u00a0she\u2019d\u00a0start losing her personal filter. Interestingly, Matsuoka Misato, who voices Chainsmoker Cat\u2019s second most memorable character Yakuko, notes that the anime\u2019s sound director instructed the cast to treat \u201cThat was\u00a0terrible\u201d as a compliment during recording, which they fully embraced with\u00a0generous amounts of\u00a0\u201ccrude\u201d ad-libbing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Funnily,\u00a0Natsuyoshi says\u00a0the experience of voicing\u00a0Yaniko\u00a0for the anime\u00a0has influenced her personal life, as she suddenly became a lot more proactive about\u00a0cleaning\u00a0her\u00a0bathtub\u00a0after\u00a0recording the\u00a0anime\u2019s\u00a0bath episode.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Chainsmoker\u00a0Cat\u00a0anime\u00a0is currently airing via Netflix.\u00a0<\/p>\n
