Notably, developments in both have impacted how your salary is structured and amount your employer is mandated to contribute towards EPF, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the key highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the new <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/epf-vs-labour-codes-if-basic-pay-must-be-50-why-is-pf-capped-at-1800-11783335631406.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Labour Codes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Labour Codes<\/a>, if allowances exceed 50% of wages, the excess is added back to wages for statutory compliance, triggering many employers to redesign salary structures. Simply, basic pay, dearness allowance (DA) and other allowances comprise 50% of your compensation \/ wages.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, the <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/epf-scheme-2026-can-employers-cap-epf-contribution-at-1-800-heres-what-the-law-says-11783497514404.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"EPF Scheme 2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EPF Scheme 2026<\/a> clarifies that mandatory PF contribution is linked to the statutory wage ceiling of  \u20b915,000 per month. Thus, calculating for 12% of  \u20b915,000, your employer is mandated to contribute minimum of  \u20b91,800 per month towards EPF. In practice, many employers have historically calculated EPF contributions on an employee&#8217;s actual basic <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/8th-pay-commission-why-employee-bodies-are-divided-over-capping-the-highest-government-salary-11783666499682.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"salary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">salary <\/a>rather than the statutory wage ceiling. As a result, PF contributions for such employees are often significantly higher than  \u20b91,800\/month. The new framework clarifies that contributions beyond the statutory wage ceiling are voluntary and can continue only with the consent of both the employer and the employee,\u201d John explained.<\/p>\n<p>On what has changed, Apurv Gupta, Founder and CEO of Otto Money noted that based on the EPF rules and Labour Codes, many employers may keep <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/1800-monthly-epf-contributions-can-build-nearly-19-lakh-retirement-corpus-heres-how-11782376293592.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"contributions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">contributions <\/a>at  \u20b91,800\/month, while the employee&#8217;s deduction is computed on the new, higher basic (50% of total pay).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read<\/strong> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/8th-pay-commission-how-employees-pensioners-union-government-departments-stakeholders-can-submit-data-cpc-stepwise-guide-11783774482603.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8th pay commission: How employees, pensioners can submit data \u2014 Stepwise guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, companies and employees typically negotiate <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/dearness-allowance-da-salary-income-tax-slabs-rate-latest-faqs-8th-pay-commission-take-home-pay-govt-employee-taxpayers-11777306719440.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"CTC \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CTC <\/a>where they include the company contribution to retirals. Employees must ensure to keep this in mind. For employers: the lower contribution threshold implies lower employer cost to company and improved profitability. For employees: improved liquidity. However, default retirals are lower and they need to take a more active role in planning their retirement. This also gives them the flexibility to shoot for higher risk adjusted return,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>EPF still beneficial? How does the math work out?<\/p>\n<p>John shared an illustration \u2014 If an employee earns a monthly basic pay of  \u20b930,000:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contribution restricted to statutory ceiling, works out as follows: PF wage ceiling:  \u20b915,000, Employee <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/epf2026-rules-will-your-take-home-salary-increase-under-the-new-1-800-pf-contribution-cap-11783089265249.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"contribution\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">contribution<\/a>: 12% \u00d7  \u20b915,000 =  \u20b91,800, Employer contribution: 12% \u00d7  \u20b915,000 =  \u20b91,800, total monthly PF contribution =  \u20b93,600.<\/li>\n<li>Contribution on actual basic salary, works out as follows: Basic salary:  \u20b930,000, Employee contribution: 12% \u00d7  \u20b930,000 =  \u20b93,600, Employer contribution: 12% \u00d7  \u20b930,000 =  \u20b93,600, total monthly PF contribution =  \u20b97,200<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWhen comparing both scenarios, EPF contributions will be significantly higher if they are calculated on the employee&#8217;s actual basic salary rather than the statutory wage ceiling continues to be a good <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/india-intangible-asset-investment-growth-wipo-11783599809364.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"investment \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">investment <\/a>avenue for building a retirement corpus. Even for long-term financial goals, it is generally not advisable to invest the entire retirement portfolio in high-risk products,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>John advised employees to continue using EPF as a low-risk retirement savings instrument \u201cthat provides stability and disciplined long-term wealth creation. EPF offers 8.25% \u2014 the highest guaranteed, sovereign-backed return available. <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/public-provident-fund-parents-invest-for-children-how-much-wealth-rs-5000-per-month-ppf-will-build-save-long-term-future-11783179743074.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"PPF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PPF <\/a>by contrast earns 7.1%\u201d. But added that whether it is favourable depends on the salary level. For monthly basic up to  \u20b915,000, nothing changes because contribution is within the threshold of  \u20b91,800 per month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsers need to plan retirement based on their <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/nps-exit-rules-explained-how-the-retirement-income-scheme-and-drawdown-options-work-11783669450670.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"income\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">income <\/a>and consequently lifestyle levels. Otto recommends a consistent savings rate of ~20%. Some portion of this should be deployed in safe assets since markets are unpredictable. EPF, up to the tax-advantaged contribution limits, is an excellent safe asset for retirement corpus,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that for those with higher salaries, a compulsory matching contribution from the employer is no longer guaranteed and those earning  \u20b93.60 lakh (basic monthly more than 15,000 per month) and above must save using other avenues instead of relying only on EPF.<\/p>\n<p>Do EPF alternatives offer better returns or tax benefits?<\/p>\n<p>According to John, VPF remains an excellent low-risk investment option for building long-term wealth and a retirement corpus. Employees should choose their investments based on their risk tolerance, investment horizon, liquidity requirements, and retirement objectives. A well-diversified portfolio that combines EPF\/<a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/public-provident-fund-ppf-employees-epf-voluntary-vpf-compare-investment-interest-rates-tax-benefits-tenure-retirement-11773421132277.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"VPF \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VPF <\/a>with other suitable investment options can help achieve both wealth creation and long-term financial security,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n<p>Gupta said Otto\u2019s recommendation on retirals advise not crossing tax-advantaged threshold ( \u20b97.5 lakh and  \u20b92.5 lakh per annum), adding, \u201cDo not get lured by the \u201ctax-free\u201d status of these schemes \u2014 see how they fit into building your retirement plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the safe\/debt part of <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/what-are-multi-asset-allocation-funds-comparing-the-top-5-funds-by-portfolio-allocation-11782804378981.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"asset \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asset <\/a>allocation, put money in EPF \u2014 up to  \u20b91,800\/month as employer contribution and up to  \u20b920,800\/month as employee contribution.<\/li>\n<li>Up to another 14% of basic pay in NPS under employer contribution. \u201cThis gives equity exposure and also enjoys the benefit of tax <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/section-80c-ita-how-you-unlock-1-5-lakh-tax-deductions-income-tax-return-filing-itr-money-saving-ppf-epf-nps-nsc-sukanya-11777885388013.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"exemption \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exemption <\/a>on income under the new tax regime (80CCD(2)).
