{"id":581917,"date":"2026-07-12T14:30:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T14:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/581917\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T14:30:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T14:30:14","slug":"armagh-astronomer-gets-2million-euro-funding-to-explore-one-of-the-great-questions-of-the-birth-of-the-universe-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/581917\/","title":{"rendered":"Armagh astronomer gets 2million Euro funding to explore one of the great questions of the birth of the universe \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">An astronomer based at Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) has been awarded funding of two million euro to investigate how the first stars in the universe \u201cswitched on the lights\u201d following the Big Bang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Professor Jorick Vink said the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant has the potential to be \u201ctransformational\u201d both for the observatory and for research worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The funding will create up to eight new research positions at AOP over the course of the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Advanced Grants give senior researchers the opportunity to pursue ambitious projects that could lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/science\/\">major scientific<\/a> breakthroughs as part of the EU\u2019s Horizon Europe programme.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/investigation-after-two-homes-destroyed-in-blaze-while-fire-service-attends-over-50-bonfire-related-incidents-RDI253DTGVG4ZMGBW7SAHAFZEU\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Houses destroyed in &#x2018;accidental&#x2019; with controversial bands taking part in parades\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/76ZAEROBNNDHPFUUS5A3GDCYH4.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Professor Vink, who has recently been appointed vice president of the Royal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/astronomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/astronomy\/\">Astronomical Society<\/a>, said receiving the funding was the \u201cpinnacle of my career\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cI\u2019ve been successful in getting grants before but none like this one \u2013 this is very prestigious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His research centres on one of the central questions in astrophysics \u2013 what ended the universe\u2019s so-called dark ages and effectively \u201cswitched on the lights\u201d in the first stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After the Big Bang, the universe expanded and entered a period known as the Cosmic Dark Ages, before the first stars ignited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The earliest stars are believed to have been much bigger than most stars we observe today, including the sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Their brightness is thought to have been responsible for flooding the universe with light, which billions of years later can be observed with instruments such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Telescope.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"25 June 2026CREDIT: LiamMcArdle.com\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/XHQEKWNHTZPLVJS74YI3Y47ZUM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>25 June 2026CREDIT: LiamMcArdle.com (Liam McArdle\/LiamMcArdle.com) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Astronomers believe that uncovering the nature of these first stars will help to understand the origin of the universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This project builds on years of research into how stellar winds shape the evolution of massive stars, helping to explain why stars and black holes were likely more massive in the early universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The research will also examine the origin of the chemical elements from which all life is made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Professor Vink said: \u201cThe oxygen we breathe, the iron in our blood, the nitrogen that we need, the carbon in our bones \u2013 that\u2019s all made in the stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The news of the award comes following the recent announcement of a major investment at AOP which will reshape the visitor attraction and research centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The development will create a new science and discovery centre, featuring a next-generation LED Planetarium, expanded research and education capability, and an immersive and engaging visitor experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Professor Vink said: \u201cThere\u2019s going to be a massive investment here over the next couple of years and there\u2019s going to be some really exciting things happening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis place will be transformed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He said the benefits of the ERC grant would also stretch beyond the observatory walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cEvery time society invests in fundamental research, it lifts the entire education system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAnd you can see throughout history \u2013 every time people have invested in science the whole of society has benefited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The grant was secured following a process where applicants submitted a detailed research proposal alongside a synopsis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Professor Vink, who is originally from the Netherlands and has been based at AOP for 17 years, hopes the project will not only advance scientific knowledge but inspire the next generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He said: \u201cHumans want to understand their own origins.
