{"id":582401,"date":"2026-07-12T21:58:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T21:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/582401\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T21:58:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T21:58:11","slug":"gardai-investigating-jamey-carneys-murder-say-finding-suspect-will-be-challenging-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/582401\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda\u00ed investigating Jamey Carney\u2019s murder say finding suspect will be challenging \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">Garda\u00ed<\/a> in Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\">Kerry<\/a> are continuing their investigation into the murder of Jamey Carney in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killarney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killarney\">Killarney<\/a> with the intention of preparing as complete a file as possible for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/director-of-public-prosecutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/director-of-public-prosecutions\">Director of Public Prosecutions<\/a> (DPP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, detectives investigating the case concede they face a challenge in locating the prime suspect, Ahmed Al Saqar (28), who had said he was from Jordan, and are continuing to gather new information daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Al Saqar fled Killarney immediately after the murder of the 43-year-old American, a mother of one, at her home off the Muckross Road last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed have established Al Saqar caught an early morning coach from Mission Road in Killarney to Bachelors Walk in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin<\/a> within hours of the murder of Carney at her rented home late last Monday night or early on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> Garda\u00ed say that upon arriving at Bachelors Walk in the city centre, Al Saqar took a taxi to Dublin Airport.  Garda\u00ed have identified him on CCTV arriving at the airport and boarding a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul at 10.40am that he had booked earlier that morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe flight to Istanbul takes  4\u00bd hours approximately so he may well have landed or was about to land at Istanbul airport when it was discovered back in Killarney that Jamey Carney had been murdered so he moved very quickly to get out of Ireland,\u201d said a Garda source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut Istanbul airport is one of the busiest hubs in the world &#8230;You could have anything up to 1,500 flights landing there daily and up to 250,000 people transitioning through the place \u2013 it\u2019s like a city in itself so it\u2019s going to be a major job to track him there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed are still trying to establish whether Al Saqar, who claimed to be  from a village called Al Husn in northern Jordan, near the border with the Palestinian West Bank and Syria, took a connecting flight elsewhere or is hiding out in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/07\/10\/killarney-murder-victim-jamey-carney-remembered-in-new-york-as-a-golden-human-being\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who was American-born Killarney murder victim Jamey Carney?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe may not even be who he says he is,\u201d the Garda source said.  \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a challenge to locate him but Jamey Carney was an American citizen so maybe if America was to put on diplomatic pressure that might yield some results as to where he might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed are continuing to gather information for a file for the DPP with a view to getting a direction to charge Al Saqar. The force can only seek the extradition of a suspect in a case if they have a direction to charge them with a crime and not as part of any investigation process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Detectives have been taking witness statements from people in the area who knew Al Saqar as they try to gather as much information as they can about him and build up a profile. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed hope those who know him may help give \u201csome pointers as to where he is or where he might be headed\u201d, the source said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Al Saqar came to Ireland from the UK in 2024, travelling first to Northern Ireland before making his way to Dublin. He later moved to Killarney. It is understood he became involved in a relationship with Carney, whom he met at a pro-Palestine rally in the town. He had recently been spending more and more time at Carney\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carney was originally from Westchester County, north of New York City, and had moved with her young daughter Michaela to Ireland in May 2021, settling in Killarney.
