Nina Dobrev<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s breakup may not have been written in the stars, but rather on her hand.<\/p>\n

Just five days before the news that she and Shaun White<\/strong><\/a> broke up after five years<\/a> together, Nina stepped out onto the red carpet for the premiere of Eternity at the Toronto Film Festival without her engagement ring.<\/p>\n

For the Sept. 7 occasion, the Vampire Diaries alum donned a figure-hugging black dress with lace adorning the top. She styled the look with sparkling shoes and clutch\u2014but no shimmering ring.<\/p>\n

The diamond\u2019s absence from Nina\u2019s left hand was most noticeable in a carousel of images from the event, which she captioned, \u201cHere\u2019s to Eternity #TIFF\u201d<\/p>\n

Among images of her on the red carpet and posing with her friend\u2014and the movie\u2019s star\u2014Miles Teller<\/strong>, was one of Nina in a group photo with his wife Keleigh Teller<\/strong> and other pals. Her left hand, resting on her lap, only bears a ring on her middle finger.<\/p>\n

But while the diamond ring\u2014gifted to Nina by Shaun when he popped the question in October 2024\u2014was gone at TIFF, the 36-year-old was wearing it when she and the Olympic snowboarder hit up a farmer\u2019s market in Los Angeles August 31.<\/p>\n

Though Nina and Shaun seemed a happy pair at the time\u2014Shaun carrying a big bouquet of flowers in his arms\u2014E! News has since learned the pair had called it quits.<\/p>\n

As for what drove them apart, a source told People<\/a>, “It was a mutual decision, and wasn\u2019t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Nina shared she and Shaun, 39, hadn\u2019t yet started wedding planning<\/a>, five months after Shaun got down on one knee.<\/p>\n

“I really want to enjoy it and not rush that process,” she explained E! News in March. “We’re just enjoying being engaged at this point and being in that sort of phase because a lot of your life is\u2014you have a boyfriend for half of your life and then you have a husband for half of your life, but the fianc\u00e9 period is very short.”<\/p>\n

Of her then-partner, Nina added, \u201cIt\u2019s so fun to say fianc\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n

A year later, amid the coronavirus pandemic, Dobrev would share this photo of her and White at the bash, as well as a video of him lifting her up Dirty Dancing-style only to have them both topple into the snow. She wrote<\/a>, “How we thought 2020 would go…how it actually went.”<\/p>\n

Dobrev and White spark romance rumors<\/a> after they are spotted riding bikes together in Malibu, Calif. A source tells E! News that the two began to “ease into a relationship<\/a>” after spending New Year’s Eve together, adding that things “really accelerated” between the two after the coronavirus pandemic broke out.<\/p>\n

“After spending weeks together during quarantine,” the source says, “Nina and Shaun have made it clear to their friends that they are a serious couple.”<\/p>\n

The two make their relationship Instagram<\/a> official when both share a photo of the actress trimming White’s red hair. Most hair salons closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Under her post, Dobrev writes, “Adding to resume: hairdresser.”<\/p>\n

Judging from their Instagrams, Dobrev and White vacationed together in the Zion National Park area in Utah twice in 2020, in May and in December.<\/p>\n

Just before New Year’s Eve, another source tells E! News<\/a> that the two “are genuinely so in love.”<\/p>\n

Dobrev celebrated a “redo” of her 31st birthday on her 32rd and White paid tribute to her with photos of the two sporting these looks.<\/p>\n

Alonside pal Adam DeVine<\/strong>, the couple dressed up as characters from The Queen’s Gambit for Halloween with White going as as the iconic Beth Harmon and Dobrev channelling U.S. chess champion, Benny Watts.<\/p>\n
