\n\tWarner Bros has just dropped the first trailer for the Tom Cruise<\/a>-starring, Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu-directed Digger<\/a>, and, well, buckle up.<\/p>\n

\n\tAla Cruise\u2019s major studio boss Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder, the actor transforms into another kind of opposite once again: a very blunt Southern-talking, older potbelly oil baron who may have set off a massive global ecological disaster. His name, Digger Rockwell. He\u2019s the only guy who can fix what looks to be a rapidly melting iceberg crisis, and he\u2019s ordered by the standing U.S. President (John Goodman) to save the day (a Leader of the Free World who is both a combo of Trump and Joe Biden; the latter evident in Goodman\u2019s POTUS falling asleep at the wrong time).<\/p>\n

\n\tFrom the looks of this, it\u2019s Doctor Strangelove for the Trump era, or as I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said in a video introduction reel last Thursday at Warner Bros, \u201cLadies and gentlemen, prepare yourself, because Mother Nature loves motherf*ckers.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAlso in attendance last Thursday was the actor who constantly has the need for speed, especially when it comes to his curiosity for fresh characters, Mr. Cruise. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe 4x Oscar-winning I\u00f1\u00e1rritu began conceiving Digger, \u201cjust after The Revenant, when I had an idea, not script, not a film, just a relentless recurring obsession, that has endured through all these wild years. I knew who this character was.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe film needed Tom. We wanted to work together since the beginning of the century, said I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019. \u201cI admired him as an actor for years, and that wasn\u2019t a surprise for me. The surprise was discovering that the human being behind the actor was just as extraordinary as the performances I will see throughout his career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe transformation he went through was astonishing,\u201d added I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019, with Cruise telling him \u201c\u2018It took me 40 years to become this character.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise was a longtime fan of the director\u2019s breakout 2000 film, Amores Perros, and when he was pitched Digger Rockwell, the Risky Business star said, \u201cAlejandro, he shows me, he\u2019s like, \u2018I want you to look like this.\u2019 And it wasn\u2019t like he said, \u2018This is the kind of character.\u2019 So, I\u2019m thinking, \u2018This guy\u2019s got f*cking balls,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018I can\u2019t wait. Let\u2019s go.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tExpounding more on his process, Cruise said, \u201cWhether it\u2019s Les Grossman or Interview With the Vampire, Collateral or Risky Business, I\u2019m always asking, \u2018How do I communicate this?\u2019 The physicality, the makeup, that is stuff that you find as you are learning how to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cYou really have to understand the tools, it\u2019s not one size fits all. You have to find the communication, the lenses, the color of the makeup. The level of detail of making a film like this is\u2026 Color of the cowboy boots. What are my shorts like? The sets, the color of the sets. They\u2019re beautiful on every single level, and it\u2019s all very\u2026 You look at the taste of this man. It\u2019s very special.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDigger was shot in VistaVision on a 1954-designed camera, and for the production I\u00f1\u00e1rritu reteamed with his Oscar-winning The Revenant DP, Emmanuel Lubezki.<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise exclaimed at the event, \u201cI think when you see Digger, just the level of detail, the skill, the layers of making this film\u2026 He\u2019s (I\u00f1\u00e1rritu) never made something like this before, nor have I.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWe\u2019re told this is the same trailer which was first shown to exhibitors at April\u2019s CinemaCon. <\/p>\n
