{"id":583899,"date":"2026-07-13T19:50:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/583899\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T19:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:50:12","slug":"back-to-school-payment-allowance-heres-what-you-need-to-know-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/583899\/","title":{"rendered":"Back-to-school payment allowance: Here\u2019s what you need to know \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 100,000 families across the country will start to receive the back-to-school allowance this week from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-social-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-social-protection\">Department of Social Protection<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Families with children aged two to 22 who do not automatically receive the payment can apply now for the scheme, which provides between \u20ac160 and \u20ac285 per school-going child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The scheme was expanded this year to include children going to preschool, who are two and three years old. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department of estimates  an additional 37,000 children will benefit from it this year, with the State providing \u20ac60.4 million for the scheme this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It comes amid rising costs and increasing pressure on parents to provide uniforms, technology and transport for their children. <\/p>\n<p>Who is the scheme for?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The back-to-school clothing and footwear allowance is designed to help families towards the escalating costs of returning to school. It is a means-tested, once-off payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">To qualify,  the child must be aged between two and 17 on September 30th of the year you are applying, or they must be aged between 18 and 22 and returning to full-time second-level education in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p>How much is provided per child?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If the child is aged between two and 11 on September 30th, the rate of payment is \u20ac160. If they are aged between 12 and 22 on September 30th, they will receive \u20ac285.<\/p>\n<p>Are there limits on who can receive it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Yes. Firstly, your child must qualify for the scheme. Secondly, you must qualify for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-welfare-payments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-welfare-payments\/\">social welfare payment<\/a>, your household must be within the income limits of the scheme and you and the child you are claiming for must be resident in Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">You must be getting a child support payment for each child you are claiming for, except in certain circumstances. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If you are getting the foster care allowance for an eligible child, then you can also qualify for the scheme. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The household income limits are listed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensinformation.ie\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.citizensinformation.ie\/en\/\">citizensinformation.ie<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>How can I apply for it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Applications opened on June 3rd, with the first payments being made from Monday, July 13th. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 109,000 qualifying families will be paid automatically this week without needing to apply. You will receive confirmation of the payment on your MyWelfare account or by post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If you do not automatically receive the payment, you can apply online through <a href=\"https:\/\/services.mywelfare.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/services.mywelfare.ie\/\">mywelfare.ie<\/a>.
