{"id":584285,"date":"2026-07-14T00:41:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T00:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/584285\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T00:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T00:41:17","slug":"jamey-carney-murder-gardai-believe-man-arrested-in-jordan-is-victims-boyfriend-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/584285\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamey Carney murder: Garda\u00ed believe man arrested in Jordan is victim\u2019s boyfriend \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">Garda\u00ed<\/a> believe a man arrested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jordan\/\">Jordan<\/a> is Ahmed Al Saqar, the boyfriend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/07\/12\/gardai-prepare-file-on-killarney-murder-suspect-concede-finding-suspect-will-be-challenging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/07\/12\/gardai-prepare-file-on-killarney-murder-suspect-concede-finding-suspect-will-be-challenging\/\">murdered American woman Jamey Carney<\/a>, who they consider the prime suspect in her killing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Times understands the Garda has requested assistance and information from a number of other police forces as part of the murder investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, they have not made any request, to the Jordanians or any other police force, for the arrest of the person of interest in the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Al Saqar, the prime suspect who is believed to be from Jordan, left Ireland for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/turkey\/\">Turkey<\/a> immediately after the killing and before the woman\u2019s  body was discovered in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killarney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killarney\">Killarney<\/a>, Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\">Kerry<\/a>, home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He had landed  in Istanbul on a flight from Dublin before the remains were found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A requiem mass is due to take place at noon on Wednesday in St Mary\u2019s Cathedral, Killarney, followed by a private cremation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sources said they strongly suspected the man detained in Jordan is the same person being sought by detectives in Kerry over the murder. But they were unable to comment on why he had been arrested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">No arrest has been requested by Ireland of any country because the murder investigation is in its early stages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed have not gathered enough evidence, or developed the case sufficiently, to seek the arrest of anyone in Jordan or any other jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/07\/10\/killarney-murder-victim-jamey-carney-remembered-in-new-york-as-a-golden-human-being\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who was American-born Killarney murder victim Jamey Carney?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Investigators would only be in a position to request a suspect\u2019s arrest in another country if the investigation had reached the stage of charges being approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) against that person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A website operated by Jordanians in Ireland reported on Sunday that the man, whom they did not name, had been detained by the Jordan Public Security Directive but the Jordan authorities did not respond to a media query from The Irish Times regarding the arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, a group called Jordanians in Ireland Forum have posted a message on social media commending the Jordanian authorities for arresting the suspect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe forum highly commends the swift response and efficiency of the Public Security Directorate in Jordan which led to the arrest of the suspect last night where he is currently detained pending further investigation,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, a Garda source confirmed  they had received reports that a person with the same name as Jamey Carney\u2019s boyfriend, Ahmed Al Saqar, had been detained in Jordan but they were still awaiting confirmation that it is the same man as they are seeking to speak to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis arrest was not made on foot of any request from An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na and it\u2019s for the Jordanian authorities to confirm the arrest and if it is the same person and on what basis he is being detained in Jordan,\u201d said the source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed in Kerry declined to comment on the report and referred any queries to the Garda press office but they have yet to issue any statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed are satisfied that Al Saqar caught a Green Coach from Mission Road in Killarney at 4.30am on July 7th to Bachelors Walk in Dublin and from there got a taxi to Dublin Airport where he caught a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul at 10.40am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed believe that he had already landed, or was about to land, in Istanbul Airport when they received a report at 1pm on July 7th that Jamey Carney had been found dead at her home in Homeland on the Muckross Road in Killarney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Detectives are continuing with their investigation and it is understood both forensics and analysis of the suspect\u2019s phone activity could prove critical in their efforts to prepare a file for the DPP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda technical experts are trying to establish a location for the suspect via his phone activity at the time they believe Jamey Carney was murdered. They are anxious to try to establish where he was when he booked the 10.40am flight with Turkish Airlines from Dublin to Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under Irish extradition law, garda\u00ed can only seek the extradition of a suspect to either serve an existing sentence or for the purpose of charge for a new offence. They cannot seek the extradition of a person as part of their investigation or simply in order to question them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland does not have a comprehensive bilateral extradition treaty with Jordan.
